Speech and Language Career Advice

I am looking to study SLT next year 2025 but I have some doubts about the career in terms of progression and if it is a well-paying career. Other than working for the NHS and progressing through bands and also working in private clinics, I'm worried that you're capped at 60k and I feel like in a lot of healthcare careers you can be capped, however at least with other courses such as Radiography you have the option to Locum and earn more. Just wondering if any SLT can advise on ways to earn a decent salary whilst doing a career you genuinely have a passion for

The top of band 5 is higher than the median UK salary so you will earn a decent salary by definition. (You can easily be a band 6 within 1-2 years of graduation too and earn more). As you say, there tends to be a cap to earnings within the NHS, most often at the top end of band 7 with only a few organisations employing therapists at band 8.

I am not sure why you think SLTs have fewer locum options than radiographers? Your radiography example is actually a bit odd as you are tied exclusively to the NHS or large employers whereas SLTs (and others like OTs, physiotherapists) can work self-employed / privately with minimal start up costs. The last locum job I worked (and could still work if I choose) paid £45 per hour plus expenses just to give you an example.
