Year 12s 13s did you guys already know what alevels you wanted to take

I’m in yr 11 now and really thinking about alevels so I’m wondering if you guys already knew what you wanted to take and if you didn’t what helped you decide?
Hey,
So I knew I wanted to do some sort of like engineering or tech subject because I liked doing it as an option in year 10/11. So I looked at physics. Plus at this point I thought about a job in engineering so I also picked maths.

I knew what A-levels I wanted take for the most part, although I was a little stuck between sociology and RS (I ended up picking RS). I picked art but in the July before I started sixth form I switched to biology which I really enjoyed.

Hi @harishni14,

Although I'm no longer in sixth form, I'd still love to add my input.

When I was in year 11, I had no idea what A-levels I wanted to take, and that's okay! Here are some ways I decided on my subjects:

Passion: Choose subjects you already have a passion for, then you will be certain you will enjoy studying them further. Even though at the time I didn't pick my Geography A-level because I wanted to use it for my career, it led me towards an interest in a business degree because of studying globalisation. Also the benefit of picking a subject you already love is you will be dedicating the majority of your time towards it for the next couple years.

Career goals: If you have a general idea of the career your aiming for then I recommend researching the appropriate A-levels to take to push you in the right direction. If you have no idea what career you want, that's fine! A lot of people don't, so I recommend referring back to my first point.

Degree requirements: If your planning to go to university and have an idea of the course you want to study, I recommend looking at the A-level requirements to ensure your going to meet the criteria.

These are the main criteria I recommend going by, but here's a few other ideas if your still struggling

Your strengths

Subject combination

Assessment type (essays, course work, exams, practical, etc)

Difficulty and workload

I hope this helps, please feel free to message me any questions,
-Sophia (Business and Management)
To be honest, not really. I thought I did at first in Year 11 but then I did research on the courses I would want to do at uni and what a levels they require. Then that's when I figured out which subjects to do and it's what I'm doing now in Year 13 ofc. But tbf you still have a while and can probably change your subjects in the first few weeks of sixth form.

Nope! I'd always liked English, and did well in it in GCSE mocks, so I picked English Language and Literature basically on a whim without really thinking about it (I don't recommend this at all lol!) Then I also did Psychology because I went to an open evening and it sounded interesting. But essentially, I didn't really have a clue. I didn't and still don't know what I want to do at uni or for a career, so I picked my A-levels based off of what I liked and what would open a lot of doors. If there's any open days/evenings you can go to for your sixth form/college then definitely go.

In short, pick something you'll enjoy doing for the next 2 years and that you can work hard at. It's also good to pick something that could keep your options open in the future for whatever you decide to do. Good luck!

2 and a half months into Y12 and I still don't know  That's genuine as well - I have to drop a subject out of my 5 and I just have no clue which one I should drop.

im currently taking my alevels and i love them, but at the time i had absolutely no clue which ones to choose. this might not be the best approch but i decide on my alevel by filling in 3 catagories

which did i do the best in

which one would i enjoy

and which one had the most promising futer prospect if i did take it ( assuming you did okay to well in the subject of course)

while figureing out which career path i shoud take after the fact was difficult, i can at very least say i fully enjoy my subject, and what the point of persuing acedemics if it makes you miserable? although money is important, i can only imagin that if you choose a levels you dont like then you aren't likely to find the careers they offer any more fufilling.
