SFE funding for Allied Health Courses

Hello,
I hope someone can help me with my rather complicated SFE related question!
I have a degree in History which I completed back in 2011.
In 2020 I started a second undergraduate degree in Speech and Language Therapy. As this is an Allied Health Profession I was able to receive full SFE funding, but unfortunately I had to drop out due to health reasons after two years and never completed the course. I'd like to have another attempt at a Speech and Language degree starting in 2025 and wondered whether I would be eligible for student finance for a third time?
Thanks so much in advance!

Hi,
I hope you are okay now, and are well in health!🙂

Speech and Language Therapy sounds really interesting! It's great to hear that you are looking to go back to university.

While I'm too sure about your exact situation, hopefully @StudentFinance will be able to guide you on this. I would suggest contacting them directly, as they would be able to give you the guidance you are looking for🙂

You can find their contact information here😊

I hope this helps!
Best wishes,
Josie

Hi there, is this the same course as you previously studied and how many years had you previously studied the course for? Thanks, Jason

Hello, thanks very much for getting back to me. It's the same course, but I want to study at a different university. I completed two years previously.

Hi there,

Would you be starting from year 1 again?

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,
Yes, I would.

Hi BB2306,

As you are repeating the same Allied Health Professional course standard previous study rules would apply this time. This means you would need to self fund the 1st year of your new course or you can send us Compelling Personal Reasons evidence to apply for an additional yar of tuition fee funding.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi Calum,
Ok, thank you for letting me know. If I were to apply for a different Allied Health course (I'm also interested in Occupational Therapy), would I have full access to funding again?

Hi there,

Yes, that's correct - if you have a particualr course in mind let us know and we'll check to make sure it's an exception.

Thanks, Graeme

Aren't all AHP and nursing and midwifery courses exempt from previous study rules? I've seen SFE advise someone on this forum that they are entitled to full funding again for restarting a midwifery course.

Actually, yes - sorry for the confusion.

So, if you start a new AHP exception course then that's normally fine, even if it's one you've studied before.

Just to clarify, when did you last study the Speech and Language Therapy, was that back in 2020?

Thanks, Graeme
@BB2306 The previous question is for you.

Hi Graeme,
Yes, it was back in 2020. So am I able to receive 3 years of funding for another Speech and Language Therapy course, even though I've studied Speech and Language Therapy before?
Thanks very much,
B

Thanks Claire. Graeme said that actually I would be eligible for the same course? I’m not a registered SLT as I didn’t complete the course first time round, and in the SFE guidance it says normal rules don’t apply unless you’re registered in that field.

I feel like I’m getting conflicting information and I’m not sure who to believe.

Hi there, this depends on the exception course you're looking to study. If you plan on doing Occupational Therapy then we disregard your previous study. If you are looking to return to the same course and university you previously studied (but didn't complete your qualification), then this may mean you're assessed based on previous study rules. You mentioned you studied 2 years and withdrew due to health reasons. If this is the case and you're fees are blocked for year 1 then you can also claim back an extra year of funding. I've enclosed further steps here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/going-back-to-uni-or-repeating-a-yearhttps://www.gov.uk/guidance/going-back-to-uni-or-repeating-a-year. Thanks, Jason

So is this incorrect from Graeme?
