Paired presentation tomorrow, what should I do? freaking out.

Tomorrow morning is assessment day for a module on my course, we have been paired up with someone by our lecturer and we have to give a 20 minute presentation. I looked at the module guide as soon as it was released so I knew this was coming and I've been working on this project since week one.

I shared the PowerPoint with my partner so she could have access and it has 18 slides on, 17 of which I have completed and the other one she started. The issue is, on her one there's only one word on there. I've been contacting her on social media platforms and via the official routes such as the university email. There's been two responses that's it. I had to get the module leader involved and even she admitted to having a hard time getting hold of my partner. I'm concerned as it's less than 24 hours until our assignment, we've been informed we're the first pair to start at 9:00 am. I'm so stressed out about this presentation. I know it's stupid but I feel like she's recreated our presentation on her end and hasn't shared it with me, if she has I won't know what's on there and I've been practicing my end of the presentation for the last week.

We're being group marked so we will receive the same grade, I feel like we should be individually marked as it's not fair. Is there anything I can do?

Hi there,

I know your situation isn't ideal the night before the presentation. As it's getting closer towards the presentation, I would try to focus on what you have prepared. It sounds like you've worked hard on the presentation, so don't let your partner's actions impact your hard work.

If you are concerned, I would try to talk to your tutor tomorrow. I know your presentation is an early start so it may be difficult to catch them before your time slot. But if you feel unsure about how you will be marked given your partner's contribution, I would chat to them for some reassurance.

I would get some rest tonight and feel confident in the work you have prepared. And I'm sure it will work out tomorrow.

All the best for tomorrow. 🙂

Hi

I completely understand why you are feeling the way you are, however, I would just try to remember how much you have done and for that, you should be proud. I would try to remain as confident as you can on the elements of the presentation that you have done as this will help you to perform the best you can tomorrow.

You could maybe mention to the lecturer at some point how you felt there was a lack of group work within this assignment and your partner didn't contribute enough.

I hope this helps & good look for your presentation.

Hi there,

I hope your presentation went well in the end.

This sounds like quite a stressful situation, and I have been in situations like this before in group work where people don't pull their weight and it can be really frustrating and stressful!

Hopefully you managed to talk to your tutor about this and explain the situation to them and hopefully they can take this into account when marking your work.

I think you do the right thing by trying to contact them and telling your tutor about this - if this every happens again, make sure you do this again as it is important that you have evidence that you tried to communicate with them and tried to get them to do their work. This way your tutor can see that you have tried and if you tell them too then they can also try and get in contact with them and they know that you have tried your best.

Sometimes you will have to do a peer assessment where you rank other group members on their effort and contribution, so if you get the chance to do this, make sure you write what happened and sometimes they ask for evidence so email chains are good to keep and upload.

I hope some of this helps,

Honestly, just keep your module tutor in the loop, (summarise the contact that you've had the evening before), and just deliver the bit that you have. Sounds like they're aware that they are flakey.
