Social Life At Oxbridge

Hi!! I've always had questions regarding social life at Oxbridge. People say that American unis have a more social aspect, and Oxbridge is more like inner-circle? Is it so purely academia-based? If anyone at Oxbridge could give insight to this it would be so appreciated!

Oxbridge students have good social lives and do plenty of extra curricular activities. They also work very hard and this makes the terms very intense.

I obviously haven’t been to an American Uni, but honestly I wouldn’t say social life is much based on academia. It’s a big university and people do all kinds of activities & make friends in different places. Maybe some colleges have more of a large friend group within the year but I imagine it’s pretty similar to most other unis, except the terms are very intense. (Have just graduated from oxford.)

There is abundant social life at Oxford. My daughter is half way through her first term at Oxford and is working very hard, but also partying, making friends, and pursuing a sport. Her experience so far seems not dissimilar to mine many decades ago (although I have still never set eyes on my college's sports ground, which is rumoured to be somewhere in Summertown). Oxford is academically and socially intense, and the longer vacations are a time to rest and reflect, unless you are living out of college in a 52 week rental, in which case, party on, Wayne.

yh there's plenty social life if you put in some effort or are just naturally sociable. a lot is centred around societies and activities tho so like get good at whatever ur hobbies are cos stuff like music tends to be really high level at cambridge anyway. also be ready for debates with literally everyone and ppl tryna show off how smart they are in the first few weeks. its kinda cringe but yh

Oxford Uni has over 400 clubs and societies, including quidditch (now called quadball). Students have been known to take a glass of wine on occasion. The only time students sit around in small groups speaking Latin is during a Classics tutorial.
