Imperial Geophysics Interview 2024

Hi guys,

I just got an invitation for an interview for geophysics at Imperial next Wednesday (20th Nov). Has anyone else got one? And has anyone got any advice from theirs or any indication of what it’ll be like and what kind of focus the questioning will take?

Thank you!

I have applied for geophysics too but have not heard anything yet. When did you apply and are you an International student? I've applied on 20th of October and I am a UK student

I'm also a UK student, I applied a little earlier than you I think, my application was received by the department on the 10th of October, and I submitted to UCAS a few days before that, perhaps you're part of a different admissions cycle

And when have you got your invitation if its not a secret?

And as of a genuine help for interview (not my own but what I've heard from previous years in school, my mates and all the videos on youtube, my teachers lifehacks) :

1 - if you have read and written about a book / podcast ect. in your PS, then just look/read the very little part you wrote about, do not talk about as your initiative (still be revisiting the whole book as we do not know, may be that person may love that book and just ask questions on that?) but in case they tell you to tell them something - try to link it to some concept/idea you wrote in your PS. For example, if you wrote about Seismic effects then do not spend most of the time talking about magnetic field or planetary motion, you can link that but try making what you actually wrote about the main topic when talking.

2 - it is good to look guys as Veritasium or 1 Brown 3 Blue, especially listen to how they !!! INTERLINK !!! the very different topics. It is because you may be asked some random theoretical question, e.g "What is impact of tides on ____ ?" and there may be anything, so perhaps be very prepared to be creative.

3 - If you do Maths, especially - Further Maths, revise all the things. The amount of time I've heard of people saying that they've got some random differentiation as a question in their interviews Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics) from year 13 students when I were in year 12 was kinda predictable but still a lot.

4 - Do not sit quiet if you are given a team work BUT at the same time do not be the only one who answers first. Even if you see that nobody answers or even has an idea of what to say, give interviewers a few seconds and only then start answering. Changing your tone for each answer ( by tone I mean not shouting or whispering but more of like telling faster than slower, happier than more melancholic ) may also help as your voice will be more memorable yet it wont be sounding like you are trying your best to make yourself the fastest gigamind.

5 - Do not worry about anything. Even if you do not have any answers, start saying something you think may have simily/relation to what is asked.

I've applied for Geophysics as well, and got an invitation last week for 5th December. My application was sent on 9th October, and was received on the 11th. Maybe Imperial separates admission cycle with the deadline for Oxford/Cambridge courses (15th October)?

Also, good luck to OP for your interview.

Thank you for the advice! I got my invitation last Monday so the 11th of November

Thank you very much! And good luck for yours. Did you apply to Oxford as well? I did and interviews for that course are in the week beginning the 9th of December so perhaps they tried to spread it out.

Assuming you're talking about the Earth Sciences course, I have! Not sure I would choose it even if I got an offer though since the price is absolutely crazy as an international student, and that I think Imperial's overall course content and style are more attractive. Still waiting to see if I'll get an invite to interviews though, seems like people are starting to get invites on the Oxford applicants Google Form.

I guess that could be a potential reason too, seeing that my interview for Imperial is on the week before the 9th. I'll still be anxious for sure though.

Have your interview happened yet? And, if you don't mind sharing, how did it go?

Hello, yeah my interview happened, I think it went alright, but these things are hard to tell really! I’ve just today received an interview invitation from Oxford for the Earth Science course (yes you were right that is what I was referring to).

Regarding your imperial interview, what you’ll be asked will massively depend on who you get interviewing you, amongst my group of 16 or so from last week some got asked technical questions and some didn’t so it’s not easy to predict! But good luck nonetheless, I’m sure you’ll do great

Hi! Glad to hear that it went fine. Guess I'll have to keep waiting anxiously for my interview day to come.

I've just got an invite from Oxford last night too! It came in right before I was about to sleep. Hopefully we will both get good offers.

(Also, not sure if this is against any rules here, but would you like to keep in touch on another platform? Afterall posting here isn't really efficient. My discord username is .)

Hello, well done on your Oxford offer! I’ll add you on discord (I don’t know if it’s against any rules either)
