I was looking at this government guidance - it doesn’t seem to state any subjects for ‘top up’ qualifications?

“You may be eligible for limited funding in certain circumstances.

You may get limited funding if you’re ‘topping up’ a higher education qualification, for example you’ve finished an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree and now want to do an Honours degree.

You may also get limited funding if you hold an Honours degree or a higher level of qualification and start a new course. This could be a part-time Honours degree, a joint Honours degree or an Integrated Master’s degree in one of the following (or 2 if it’s a joint Honours degree)”
Hi YvonneBe,

Yes, that is correct. Do you already hold a degree?

Thanks,
Calum

I have a HNC and a postgraduate diploma. I don’t have a degree.
What course did you study for your Postgraduate Diploma? Was this gained after your HNC? Did you have funding for both of these courses? Thanks, David

My HNC is Business and Finance. My PGDip is Management Studies. The post grad qualification was gained after the HNC and both were paid by my employer. The problem I have is that a first degree is required to teach in schools. I can’t qualify for QTS with the qualifications I have.
Hi YvonneBe,

If you already hold a postgraduate diploma we would be able to offer funding for an honours degree top up as this is a lower level qualification.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi YvonneBe,

Sorry, that was a spelling mistake. We wouldn't be able to offer funding for a top up degree if you already hold a higher level qualification.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi there. This would not be a full time exception course.

You can have a look at the types of courses that would be considered exceptions here: https://www.heinfo.slc.co.uk/resources/guidance/courses-management-service-user-guide/eligibility/equivalent-or-lower-qualification-elq-exceptions/?alttemplate=printchapter&id=1454

There are different ones for part time and full time. Thanks, Leah.

Thanks. Below is the guidance I’m referring to. Part-time isn’t specified as a requirement for a joint honours degree ?

agriculture and related subjects

architecture (if it’s a MArch RIBA Part 2 course)

biological sciences

computer science

mathematical sciences

medicine and allied subjects

physical sciences

technologies

courses leading to qualification as a veterinary surgeon”

Hi Yvonne,

Can you please clarify your previous study again? So, what qualifications do you currently have?

Thanks, Graeme

I have a HNC in Business and Finance and a postgraduate diploma in Management Studies. I don’t have a degree.

Thanks for clarifying - since this is a top-up you may actually be entitled to funding since you don't have a degree, like you said.

In this case we'd recommend making an application online now, or as soon as possible. That way, we can tell you for sure what you're entitled to once you're approved.

Please apply by logging in here.

Thanks, Graeme
