computer science unis at A*AA

I am a year 13 student with A*AA predicted (maths, computer science, and physics in that order).

I was looking at universities with slightly lower or equal entry requirements. However, some universities have a very low entry requirement yet most of its students apply with three A*s (University of Edinburgh..).

I was hoping to have some insight from past students who were in my situation and what universities they went on to study at because I don't want to apply to a university and waste a choice slot because they do not accept my grades.

Well it depends on what you want. CS is heavily competitive at the "top", so A*AA is no guarantee of offers at this level.

What unis do you want?

The lowest grades for Edinburgh are for contextual applicants.

I agree.
I would look at the courses and see what it is you would prefer in the modules. Also, where would you like to live for 3 years? Busy city or quieter campus?
And because Comp sci is so competitive, make sure you have a couple that are below your predicted grades for a safe bet. There are many good courses, such as Surrey on AAB.
Then have the remainder as a mixture of A*AA-AAA requirements.

I was looking at University of Edinburgh and Saint Andrews. These are the only two I'm really unsure about because other universities provide the most common grades applicants who get accepted apply with on UCAS. After looking online, there's a lot of discussion and people who say the entry requirements on their websites are very misleading because most applicants apply with way higher grades.

Wow did you have a contextual offer from Manchester or was it a standard application? Your personal statement must be very good. What type of things did you include in it? Do they like when you talk about programming projects because my personal statement does not really cover that.

What were your GCSE grades if you don’t mind telling? Is you offer at A*AA or higher?

Hi there!

Firstly congrats with your predicted grades. I'm Joshua, a current 3rd Year CS student at Southampton.

When I was in Yr 12, I applied to Southampton, Cambridge, Warwick, Royal Holloway, and Gloucester, but after going to see the Southampton campus I decided to accept Southampton.

I've enjoyed it so much so far! Our entry requirements are A*A A, and so would perfectly match your predicted grades.

I'd recommend checking out our YouTube channel and our course page for some more information, and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have 😀

All the best,

Joshua

Yeah, most likely you are contextual (you just don't know it). Or the offer was mistaken. Manchester would never give out an offer for CS if you had predicted grades lower than the entry requirements. Especially as they've been rejecting applicants with grades significantly higher than the entry requirements.

St Andrews and Edinburgh are highly competitive. As you don't take Further maths and are only predicted A*/A/A, I would go for safer unis like Nottingham, Loughborough, Exeter etc

yh no if you get a contextual offer they specify this on the offer - which i wasn’t given, and if it was a mistake lol that’s their issue😭 i think my ps was decent ngl

Sometimes you won't necessarily get a contextual offer even if you're a contextual student. Some contextual indicators give extra consideration towards your application, but won't necessarily reduce your offer. This is what happened to you (or there was a mistake on Manchester's end).

No matter what you put in your PS, if you don't meet the entry req (and you're not contextual) you will be insta rejected from Manchester CS.

i assure you i don’t qualify for a contextual to be honest so im guessing its a mistake ok manchesters end and that is their own issue!
