Mature students 2025 applicants

I thought us oldies could gather in this post to share our struggles and success in this new chapter.

How old are you?
What's your home situation? (Children, working, married ect)
Which degree are you applying to? Which unis?
What are your qualifications?

I'll start:
33, married, I have a 6 year old and very pregnant with the second, applying to Dental Hygiene and Therapy in London and Essex.
I have Dental nursing CACHE diploma, English and Maths functional skills, Access to HE course in Science and 4 years dental experience.

Hi, great idea. I'm applying to start uni next year when I retire after 42+ years as a Government policy advisor😀 I'm 58, divorced, 2 adult sons who think I'm crazy or amazing for doing this depending on the day of the week you ask them!
I want to study International Relations and Politics at LJMU in Liverpool and definitely going to study abroad as part of my course which is very exciting.
I'm 40, I'm married, I have four kids aged 19, 17, 15 and 11.

I've applied to do MSc Ancient Worlds (Archaeology and Classics) at the University of Edinburgh via distance learning in 2025.

Currently I'm in my final year of BA (Hons) Classical Studies with the Open University.
Hi I'm 57, I'm about to start an MA in Creative Projects in January - it's online and over 1 year. It begins with a week residential in Sweden. I have just taken redundancy and have been a TV reporter for 20 years. I'm going to make a film as my creative project. I'm really in need of some financial clarification about the repayment rules for the loan. I have 2 children (22 and 18 ) divorced and living with my partner and daughter . Oh, forgot to mention... terrified !

I've made your thread into a 'sticky' so that it stays at the top of the forum.

You’d be surprised to find out that most of the students I enrolled are over 40, oldest being 57

I’ve always wondered, why the brits do everything on their own when they could reach out to an agency and they will literally do the everything, we even do the SFE applications yearly doesn’t matter that the student is in year 1 or doing the top up

Because it is easy to do it yourself and most students will get help from their schools.

Hi everyone :elefant:
This is such a great thread! I’m a mature student too, and I’m doing a PhD at the university of Chester. I moved back home to study and also help look after my mum who has a long term health condition, so it works quite well for me and I get to save money on rent!
I’ve found that more and more students I meet at open days and offer holder days are mature students, especially doing postgrad courses, having had a break and coming back to studying.
Ultimately I’d like to work as a researcher and write my own texts but at the moment I’m just enjoying studying! I found that coming back as a mature student I’m taking advantage of what the uni has to offer in terms of unijobs, student support, extracurricular opportunities, I definitely missed this as an undergraduate so I want to try and make the most of it now! The university of Chester is brilliant for this
Nice to meet you all!

Hey @Yugafix, what a fantastic post for such a great cause! Maybe we could call ourselves ‘Youngish’ instead of oldies 😀.
I’m a registered AHP taking a brave step to change my career by upskilling with a full undergraduate degree in Mental Health Nursing. This is a long-standing career dream of mine, but the decision stems partly from my current physical and sensory challenges, which have made it difficult to continue in my previous role.
I live with my loving wife and young child, while my older boys are off at university themselves (unconditional peer support all around 👍👍).
However, I’m finding it quite challenging to focus on learning due to various circumstantial hurdles. I’d really value some virtual peer support for motivation and tips on coping strategies. I look forward to hearing and learning from the conversations inspired by your post.
Thank you so much!
