can i apply for a foundation year if i don't meet the disadvantaged backgrounds?

Hi, ive been thinking about applying to the university of Manchester for a foundation year for architecture as i want to go there but i dont meet the entry requirements for the normal course (AAA) but i do meet the requirements for a foundation course (BBB). when i go on their website i meet all requirements under the entry requirements page, but where it says application and selection i dont meet it as i dont live in a disadvantaged background. can anyone tell me if i would still be able to apply there?

If you did apply it would be an immediate rejection if you don’t meet the background criteria.

With BBB/120 points, there are lots of architecture courses you could apply to without taking a foundation year, and you could include one aspirational choice at ABB. Bear in mind that with architecture you get another chance to go to your dream uni when you take your masters course so think carefully if it is worth applying for a foundation year when it takes at least seven years to qualify as an architect.

Hi! I'm Charlotte, a year 2 Graphic Design Student from Norwich Uni of Arts having also studied the foundation year provided here called 'Year 0'.

That's great to hear that you're thinking of taking a creative course at uni! Have you considered us?

You can request one of our prospectuses for free here: Norwich Uni Arts prospectus or find a list of our open days on our website. You can find our more about our foundation courses here: https://norwichuni.ac.uk/study-at-norwich/4-year-degrees/

Likewise, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Good luck on choosing a uni!

Hi there

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that Manchester would consider your application if their course is designed specifically for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

However, there are plenty of other Foundation Year courses that are open to all students. At the University of Nottingham, we offer a Foundation Year which requires BBB with no contextual criteria. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you can progress straight onto our BArch Architecture course.

Hope this helps.

could you tell me more about this? i’m also in a similar situation and wanted to apply to Manchester through the foundation course due to the entry requirements, but I do not come from a disadvantaged background also. I really wanted to apply to Notts but i was worried I didn’t meet the entry requirements, but now after your message I could definitely consider! I’d be super grateful if you could post more details on it because i can’t seem to navigate or find it on your website. I’m looking to send my application next week

Yes sure! Our course is called the Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation, UCAS code H100. You can find it linked here.

You will need BBB at A-Level or equivalent, with no specific subjects. Once you've had a look at the course, I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

Please note - to progress onto our BArch course, you will need to show us a portfolio of work. We have guidance on this here.

Hi there. again, I have put this as one of my options, however I am a little confused whether I am supposed to write a separate personal statement specifically highlighting and mentioning engineering and/or physical sciences. Since I want to pursue Architecture, that is solely what I focused on integrated with my work experience, extracurriculars and my current subjects. Please let me know ASAP as I am aiming to send the application on Monday/Tuesday.

You are more than welcome to produce a secondary personal statement that aligns closely with the Foundation Year option.

After you have submitted your UCAS application with your standard personal statement, you can get in touch with us via our enquiry form to provide us with your secondary statement.

We will upload this to your Foundation Year application and our Admissions Team will assess this in place of your standard UCAS personal statement.

On your enquiry form, please ensure that you state your UCAS Personal ID so we can locate the correct record. Please also contact us using the email address that is affiliated with your UCAS account so we can verify your identity.

Please note, we definitely don't expect you to produce a secondary statement. Your primary personal statement should be absolutely fine since we understand that the BArch is what you want to progress onto after the Foundation Year. The secondary statement is just an option.

I hope this helps. We look forward to hearing from you!
