i don't know whether to drop out of university

i'm in first year, have only been at uni for two months but i'm not having a good time

course: i am not really enjoying my course at all, and it is not what i expected.

homesick: i am extremely homesick and miss my family, hometown ect. i hate the city i am at. and i feel unsafe here. i have not been home yet, and i will go home at christmas, and i know when i do i am not going to want to return here

future: my degree does not have good post-graduation career prospects. realistically if i went home i would spend time working at my job and just figure out what i want to do for awhile and which route i want to go down. i know i want to do something creative but i dont want to be constrained to a degree.

people: i have met people i get on with, and i have made lots of friends, but i would rather be with my family
is there a university closer to home that would suit you better?

Have you spoken to anyone at your university about how you're feeling?

I am sorry to hear you are not happy. Have you spoken to the University as suggested above? I would encourage you to speak to the academic department regarding the course itself and student support for support and guidance for your wellbeing. Have you looked at the courses that are offered at a University that is closer to home? Maybe some time out with your family will help you to decide what you would like to do in the new year. - JD

Hi there!

I just wanted to share that it is completely normal to feel how you're feeling. When I first came to university, I was really homesick, and wasn't really enjoying it. However, if it's any reassurance, once I got into my second semester and settled into more of a routine, and got used to my new home, things slowly got better. I'm in my third year now, and couldn't be happier.

As others have suggested, I'd really recommend talking to your academic tutor, and your university's wellbeing services. They might be able to help put accommodations and support in place to help you. If this doesn't work for you, it's okay to leave. You might find a university nearer to home that suits you better, or maybe a university centre at a nearby college? You could maybe even consider the open university?

I hope this helps, please reach out if you have any other questions.
