Can I smoke in my uni halls room?

I've read the contract and it just says that smoking in indoor communal areas isn't allowed with no mention of smoking in rooms. There is a smoke alarm in my bedroom but I'm not sure how sensitive it is as I haven't tried it yet and there's no other indications that smoking is prohibited in your room. I'm interpreting the contract as meaning smoking in your room is allowed but I don't want to get fined or kicked out if I get caught for it.

I wouldn’t advice it as I don’t think your entire block would appreciate being being flooded out and the firemen being called at 2am (happened once to one of my course mates this year just gone (2023-2024)).

I’m assuming it means in any indoor area. Normally people smoke outside the building. I also don’t think the uni would want to replace anything which has incurred smoke damage (protect your deposit).

I would usually assume it was banned too but the contract specifically refers to indoor "communal" areas which made me question it as I wouldn't class my bedroom as a communal area lol

Your alarm will go off, so no.

In my accommodation last year, all fire alarms in the house were smoke detectors, with only one exception which was the kitchen, this one was a heat detected one just in case anyone set something on fire or set the grill on by accident (like I did once).

So yeah, play it safe and don’t smoke in the building!

Check with the hall management, who will be able to tell you authoritatively. Anything anyone says here is going to be a guess.

Whatever you do, do not cover the smoke detector in your room. If you're caught doing this, you will be in very serious trouble.
