Interested in mental health nursing

Hello!
I’m going to Uni next year (hopefully York or Leeds) and I’m planning on studying mental health nursing. I was just wondering how many weeks do you tend to be at uni/ at placements in a year, like is there a typical summer holiday like there is for some of the other courses? Also, any advice for my personal statement would be great.

Email the nursing departments at the unis you are applying to and ask for a copy of this year's timetable. They can change each year but it will give you an idea of what to expect.

Have a read through the following thread on personal statements, particularly the section on vocational courses:

There are some examples of personal statements here:

Hi there 👋,

Mental Health Nursing, is an incredibly rewarding career to go into, I personally really enjoy it! Take a look at my blog on the Wrexham University Official site into my day as an MH Nursing Student!: https://wrexham.ac.uk/blog/posts/day-in-the-life-of-a-mhn-student/

For placements, most universities organise it into blocks of theory and blocks of practice. Here's an example of my placement and theory blocks last year:

September till Xmas Break: 1st Theory Block
January till February: 1st Placement (5 weeks long)
February till March: 2nd Placement (5 weeks long)
April till May: 2nd Theory Block
May till July: 3rd and 4th Placement (2x 5-week long placements, straight after one another)

In between placements we often have a week of lectures to update us on new guidelines, frameworks and offer is support. Each module in the theory block has a written assignment or powerpoint at the end of it, and every year we complete an Anatomy and Physiology Exam and a SafeMedicate Exam (an exam on the maths parts of nursing).

Hope this gives you some insight into the life of a student nurse! Good luck in your future studies!
