Fine art applicants? :)

This will be my last post on this, promise! But I’ve finally decided to apply for deferred entry to Loughborough, Aberystwyth, Southampton, Reading and UWE Bristol. Just wondered if anyone else on here is applying for art degrees and how you’ve found the process, where you’re going etc? 🩷

Hi! I'm Charlotte, a year 2 Graphic Design Student from Norwich Uni of Arts.
That's great to hear that you're thinking of taking a creative course at uni! Have you considered us? Norwich Uni Arts recently won the TEF Triple Gold (Awarded gold for student experience, gold for student outcomes and gold overall).
You can request one of our prospectuses for free here: Norwich Uni Arts prospectus or find a list of our open days on our website.
Likewise, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Best of luck with all of your applications etc!

Bahah, you’ve asked me this before 😅 absolutely nothing against Norwich, I’m sure it’s great, would just be super close to my grandparents and I’d rather be at uni starting my own thing, if that makes sense? Appreciate it though

Hi! Fine Art students are the best 😎 (just saying 😌) eheh

I don’t know much about other unis but I am studying Fine Arts at UWE and I am loving it!! To be honest I remeber that to apply I had to do all this things like an essay and a portfolio and sooo many other steps. I almost gave up because just to try to get in was a lot of work and other courses/unis had easier applications. But honestly, I am so glad I didn’t give up. UWE just opened the umbrella of Fine Art for me. It is much more than just the classics like painting, and sculpture and drawing and tecnique. It is about the meaning and the feeling of things. After all, everything can be art. I don’t even paint 😅 my practice is around making costumes and performances.

Did you attend any Open Day yet?
Can I help you with any questions you might have?

Awh, so glad you’re enjoying it! And yep, portfolio is very time consuming but I think fine art is what I really want  I’ve been to open days for Loughborough and Aber, and then am planning to attend any offer holder days I’m invited to (fingers crossed!)

Could I ask what sort of thing you included in your portfolio and how many slides it was? At the moment mine’s set to have 7 finished pieces, 7 sketchbook/process slides, 3 on artist research & application, and then a museum visit write up with photos. Mediums wise I’ve got mixed media work, charcoal sketches, pencil drawing, acrylic paint, collage and photography in there. Aber also wants a small description under 100 words for each, so I have that too.
Does that all sound like it’s going in the right direction? Thanks so much
Hi there!

It’s great to hear you’ve included Aberystwyth University in your choices! I might not be studying Fine Art myself, but I can certainly share some insights about Aberystwyth and why it’s such a fantastic place to study and live.

Aberystwyth is a vibrant and creative town that many arts students find inspiring. The School of Art is well-regarded, with strong links to the National Library of Wales, which is just a short walk away from campus. This gives you access to an incredible range of resources, archives, and collections that can really enrich your studies. During your time in the School of Art, you will have the opportunity to work with and study our internationally renowned collection of prints, photographs, paintings and ceramics.

What makes Aberystwyth stand out is its unique setting. The beautiful seafront, stunning sunsets, and welcoming community create an environment where students feel encouraged to grow personally and creatively. Many students say that the combination of a close-knit town and the freedom to explore their creative practice really helps them thrive.
If you have any questions about Aberystwyth or the student experience here, feel free to ask!

I’d be more than happy to help! Best of luck with your applications and the deferred entry process.

All the best,
Mostafa

Hi again! First of all, so sorry for my slow reply!

I did my application 4 years ago so I can’t really remember all the details but it definitely looks like you are going in the right direction. In terms of how many slides you should have I think each application is different depending on the university and if they aren’t very specific about what to include just show as much as you can that you either think represents your body of work or what are your interests and ideas and where you might go as an artist. Basically I think they just want to know your ideas and thoughts!

If you are including museum and gallery visits I think that is a bonus because shows reflective thinking and engagement! I am sure I didn’t include that in mine. I would even say that my portfolio was quite basic because I had no background at studing fine arts so I wasn’t really sure of what I was doing. What I had was little ceramics, drawings and paintings I was doing as an hobby just for fun. I remember UWE wanted me to show not only finished pieces but also work in progress. So that is what I did but tried to be selective to avoid repetition.

Hope this is helpful! Let me know if I can help you with anything else. And wish you good luck with your applications!
