Is it possible to get student loans as an international student in the UK?

Hi! I want to study English Literature in the 2026-2027 school year in England. I am Romanian and living in Romania, but I have Settled status from my father who lives in the UK and will be a British citizen by the time I apply. Can I get any sort of funding, without having lived in the UK for 3 years? I've read a section about this on the official government site, but I'm not certain if it applies to me:

"You can also apply for full support if you’ve been living in the UK, the EEA, Gibraltar or Switzerland for the past 3 years and you’re:
- an EEA or Swiss worker, or the family member of an EEA or Swiss Worker and you have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
- a family member of a UK National, both you and your family member have to have lived in the UK, the EEA, Gibraltar or Switzerland for the past 3 years. You also must have been living in the EEA or Switzerland on 31/12/2020 or in the UK having returned from the EEA or Switzerland after 31/12/2017"

Thanks for confirming.

Does your Father currently live in the UK? Have you ever lived in the UK?

Thanks,
Ross

My father lives in the UK and has been living for 5 years (I think), he doesn't plan on moving back to Romania and he will have citizenship by the time I apply. I have never lived in the UK, unfortunately 😔

Thanks Vevra.

It's quite hard to predict your eligibility at this moment in time as the eligibility can change each year.

As you're looking to get funding for the 26/27 Academic Year we don't have any information regarding the eligibility at this moment in time. I would advise to contact us a bit closer to the time to find out what you could receive.

Thanks,
Ross

Thank you! But if I were to apply for this/next year, would I have any chances? I just want to have an idea of what to expect...

Hi there. Based on our current eligibility for Home Student Funding (Maintenance Loan and Tuition Fees) EU Nationals can receive support as a home student if they meet the following criteria;

Are ordinarily resident in England on the first day of the first Academic Year (AY) of the course

Have been granted EU Settled Status prior to the first day of the first AY of their course

Have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for the 3 years prior to the first day of the first AY of their course

Will you have settled status due to you being dependent on your father? Will you father be working in the UK during your studies? Thanks, Leah.

I have settled status due to my father, yes. And he will be working in the UK during my studies!

If you have not lived in the UK for 3 years prior to the course, you would only be eligible for Tuition Fees, unless you apply as a Migrant Worker, or a family member of a Migrant Worker. We would need evidence to show you or your father are working continuously throughout your studies for this
.
Again, this is based on our current eligibility, and it would be better to check nearer the time. Thanks, Leah.
