Application for failed dissertation module

Good Afternoon,

I failed my dissertation module in my final year, which is worth 40 credits. I decided to take a year off before finishing my course. My question is, when I reapply next year, will I be eligible for the full maintenance loan? It will be my first repeated year. My dissertation module spans from October to May, but I will only have face-to-face lessons in the first term and will be expected to work on it from home during the second term with some optional drop in sessions and supervisor meetings. The full fee to repeat the module will be about £3,000, if that information is helpful. Thank you for your time and help regarding my query.

Hi Andy,

Is the course full time or part time? Will the university be classing you as in attendance for the repeat?

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire,
Thank you very much for your quick response.
It is a full-time course, but I will only be repeating my dissertation module, which is worth 40 credits out of the 120. I believe this would classify me as a part-time student. As I mentioned, I will only have face-to-face lessons in the first term, and I would like to confirm if I am still eligible for the full maintenance loan as I won’t have any lectures after December, and my final submission is in May. This module is worth 2/3 of my final grade if that is to any help.
Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to your response.

Hi there. You would need to check with the university if you are being classed as an internal or external student, as if you are classed as external, you are not entitled to any funding.

If you are classed as internal, then you would be entitled to the funding for the repeat if you have never repeated before, as you get 1 additional year from SFE for repeats. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,
As I mentioned, I will have face-to-face lectures in the first term until December and then will continue working on my dissertation without lectures until May. Due to this, could I be classified as an internal student for the first term and an external student for the rest of the year, or is there only one classification for the entire academic year?
Thank you for your help.

It's what your university class you as whether in attendance or external student. You need to speak to you university to see what they will class you as, and if you will be classed on a part time course or still full time course on a part time basis. Once you find this out you can apply online. If you're not doing the full academic year, the university would need to send us a change of circumstances to confirm the dates to and form you will be attending and the funding would be pro-rata.

Thanks,
Claire
