Journalism A levels

I'm picking my A-levels for next year and I want to eventually get a degree in journalism, I only intend to take three subjects because I would like to get a job on the side for experience. I plan on taking Media & Politics however I'm unsure as to whether I should pick English Language or English lit, the universities I would like to go too don't specify anything about english language past GCSE level and I prefer Lit so was planning on taking that ( my grades for both are expected to be the same so this is not an issue). I was wondering if anyone had and insight into which would be better to take?

Hello there,

Its great to hear you're interested in going into journalism! What a broad and exciting career path 🙂 if the uni you are interested in imply they prefer lit, then that could be a good suggestion - but if you are in doubt why not ring up their admissions team and ask outright which would be more beneficial to journalism or to the degree you are interested in. They will be the best ones to help!

However you may find that some unis simply specify any kind of writing based subject. For example, Birmingham uni's BA in Digital Media and Comms say they prefer people to have at least one essay-based writing subject which can include Eng Lang or Lit, History, Psychology, Sociology, Geography etc and so it may not make a difference in some cases which you take - which do you enjoy more?

I hope this helps and wishing you the best of luck in your choices 🙂

Are you wanting to study a more practical or theoretical based journalism course?
