My Application Process (Portfolio advice)

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all getting on well with the application process. I know this can be a stressful time and so I thought I would share my application experience, in hopes it might be useful and reassuring.

For context I am now studying Fashion Promotion and Communication at Kingston University and I applied for similar courses at four other universities.

For my applications I had to put together a portfolio, all of which where digital submission although I did prepare a physical before being contacted just in case.

My main portfolio consisted of 22 pages, although I did change this depending on the university's requirements. As I studied foundation most of the pages where filled with work from those projects, as you should include your most up to date work. Three of the pages showcased some of my A-Level textile work and in the last page I included my Instagram which contained a portfolio of more work. Some university's also asked for Pinterest and Depop handles which I would then add to this final page, however I would only add these if you feel they will add to your application and show your creativity. I don't think personal accounts are necessary.

The mediums that I included where a wide range, due to studying foundation. I included photography, graphic design, printmaking, fashion illustrations, ceramics, life drawing, printmaking and collage(digital and physical). I also included some research and process pages.

When it comes to order we where advised to put our strongest pieces at the beginning and end. Adding one sentence if the piece needs an explanation or information about the inspiration, but try to keep text limited and show off your work. Don't cram too much on one page let your pieces have space to be impactful.

Also remember quality over quantity. Don't just add all your work keep it refined, relevant and impressive.

I hope this helps and good luck  Feel free to ask any questions!
