I cant decide between physics or history for my a-level option

So im a year 11 student and i need to decide if i should do physics or history as my last a-level choice. its all really confusing and stressful so here's a backstory dump sorry...

For ages i had my academic career planned. maths, FM, econ, and history at A-level, then an econ degree, finance, and eventually politics. But I realised I also love physics and I’m good at like i get it yk. So, I thought of swapping history for physics: maths, FM, econ, and physics, then a maths degree and maybe finance or analysis. I broke down which combo would suit me best for A-levels, degree, career. It was all rly close, but I love politics too much to just stick to quantitative stuff. however I also love maths, so... yk. Then I went to an open evening, and physics seemed amazing—but so did history because the topics were sooo interesting to me! I checked out other schools’ history courses, and they didn’t look fun. Like, I’d probably deal with it, but regret not doing physics. Now I’m thinking, apply with physics instead of history at any school where the physics is great and history isn’t—but one school id do that in Ive already applied. It’s so stressful because I’m scared like what if i totally flunk the essay a-levels but ill have no physics to do maths instead, or if i do physics and then wanna do econ then i will not have the essay skills sigh. Im so sorry for being such a yappatron but ive never been so stressed in my life :frown:. plsss send help and advice <3 and also if ive been illegible this whole post lmk sorry.

You don't need economics (or history) at A-level to do an economics (or any other) degree.

Note though history at A-level is required for some degree courses though, so something to consider.

If you're very keen on history at A-level as well as interested in doing physics, then I would just suggest doing both history and physics and just don't take economics.

hmm yeah, but i did econ gcse last year and i lowkey got less than i wanted so i dont rly want that as my only econ grade. and like i really am passionate abt econ! but if i do physics and then only one (admittedly strong) essay subject im scared ill just be so deep into the quantitative side :frown:. i will consider that option tho especially for the school where both physics and history r great.

but i also had another thought. if i go with history and econ but flop them and consequently decide i wanna do maths would universities be okay with me taking a gap year to take a physics a-level at a college somewhere?

Your reasoning makes no sense. It literally does not matter whether you ever took economics, or what grade you got in GCSE economics, for an economics degree or any other course. You also don't need A-level Physics to do maths.

You need to stop making assumptions about what affects admissions rather than actually looking at what the requirements are, because they're really very far off base and are unfortunately clouding your judgment in this matter I think :s-smilie:

okay thank u, i think i understand. i'll spend my weekend researching 🙂
do physics. you will regret doing history instead and find it super boring, i can just tell. i did maths, fm, history, physics and history was terrible. physics is just so much more interesting and satisfying. a level history is all about doing stupide 30 markers and having to obsess over mark schemes it's so dull. and you can read it in ur spare time, while physics is something you're best off studying formally in school. a quant based degree will set you up better for finance so long as you can show you can write, and to go into politics ppl will respect you more if you have a hard science background (thatcher, badenoch etc)

yeah i feel like id find physics easier marking writing is always so subjective and annoying thank u!! also yes omg i can learn bits from history in my free time!! it would be so hard to do that with physics lol
