problems on placement

I'm a PA student on placement and I'll be honest, some of the Dr's don't bother teaching us or talking to us. When we try to ask a question they get annoyed and are a lot more ruder to us then the med students. On my last ward, there was a PA who has been there for ages and basically takes care of the ward, she does a lot of teaching with the PA's and basically ignores the med students like the DR's do with us. As she was teaching me how to write notes and questioning me on like relevant blood tests the med student asked if she could teach home and she said that she only really teaches PA students, which i thought was unfair and i feel like she should have given him a chane. Also on cadio , the PA is qualified in doing echo's , so the PA students got a chance to go see echos and she did alot of teaching, but the med students didn't get the same opportunity.

My question is why the divide? Everyone who is a student and wants to learn should be treated equally and have the same opportunities. I just find it unfair
Sorry to hear you've been struggling with this! I have just returned from placement and started my fourth year of university and whilst I was on placement I did experience some of the things you were mentioning about professionals not including the placement students into their work in day-to-day. Some advice I received at the time, was to always remain positive about this even when it was difficult - sometimes the professionals don't think they have the time to teach or aren't sure about their students capabilities.

One thing I found helped was really thanking them when I did get the opportunity to do something, making sure they knew I was grateful and so in the future they considered me more often for tasks they might have passed over. Getting on good terms with them, friendly not just professional really solidified my coworker relationships with them and they began to see me as more of a useful resource done an extra job for them to do.

I hope by the end of your placement you find that things improve and start to really enjoy your work there - my only other advice is near the beginning of my placement I definitely remembered to bake some things for the office just to get my name out there with some positive connotations!

Hi

Sorry to hear that you are having to deal with this. I understand how it can be frustrating sometimes as the staff is so busy sometimes that there simply isn't enough time to give each student the same opportunities, which agree with you is totally unfair.

I would speak to your university and let them know what is happening to you on placement as they will be able to help you and advise the best.

I hope this helps,

Matt
