Advice for Oxford BCL

You sound to me like a competitive candidate for a place on the BCL course, provided of course that you end up with a first. I am sorry to hear of the difficulties you faced. Good luck!

I don't know about funding, sorry. Would you not prefer to live in college, if you obtain a place? A BCL student is supposed to live within twenty five miles of Carfax (the crossroads at the top of the High Street in Oxford) The limit for undergraduates is six miles from Carfax.

Hi, I didn't want to give too much personal information away, but I do live in Oxford in an area called Jericho just outside of town, so I think I should be okay. I just wasn't sure whether id be considered because I only got a 2:1 in first year.

I lived in Jericho in my second year. I'd call it in town! It might be my favourite part of Oxford apart from Wadham College.

I can't speak for the Faculty of Law at Oxford because I don't teach there, but I would have thought that, if your final classification is a first, you won't be excluded for not obtaining first class grades in each of your three years as an undergraduate, especially having regard to the mitigating factors which you mention above.

As you know, the Oxford BCL course is hard to get on to, and the BCL might be the most difficult one year taught postgraduate law degree in the World. Even good candidates miss out on places, but give it your best shot.

I teach part time on the LLM course at UCL. If Oxford say no, maybe bear UCL in mind, unless of course you are already at UCL and would prefer a change of scene, in which case maybe try Cambridge, KCL, etc.

Hi, I love Jericho and I personally consider it town but I know some people in my area who think otherwise - not sure why though.

I did look at UCL but the entry requirements talk about the 65% average thing and was wondering how likely it is I will get in given my circumstances? It is one of the choices for my masters, but I was concerned of flat out rejection if I didn't meet the benchmark.

Hello, I am not involved in LLM admissions at UCL, so I don't know how your academic profile will be regarded there (assuming that you finish your first degree with a first next summer), but if you have a shot of Oxford (and I think that you have a shot) then you may also have a shot at UCL.

my understanding of the BCL is that only those who rank in the top 5% of their respective cohorts have a good chance of securing a place on the course, unless you maybe have numerous prizes in modules related to what you want to do (let's say contract and equity, if your statement is framed on the basis of your interest in private law and the law of obligations; or public and human rights if your statement is framed on the basis of wanting to do human rights or PIL or something like that). Then for Cambridge, my understanding is that you're a competitive candidate if you score in the top 10%.
