final three weeks of oxford term

does anyone know if the final three weeks go by quickly? three weeks today i'll be picked up and term will be over, but because of how long time feels here, that feels like a lifetime away. just wondering if, from past experience, anyone remembers if weeks 6/7/8 go by quicker than the first five weeks? really hate it here and all i want is for term to be over so am counting down the days, but it feels forever away right now.

Perception of the passage of time is subjective, and time can hang heavy upon a person who is unhappy.

No university is a prison. You can leave at any time. If your health is suffering, go home. Whether you return to Oxford next term is up to you and your college, but you already have a thread about that. I hope that, whatever you decide to do, you will feel happier soon.

Shakespeare says

"Pleasure and action make the hours seem short" (Othello, Act 2, Scene 3)

and

"Short time seems long in sorrow's sharp sustaining" (The Rape of Lucrece)

Have you read Shakespeare's Sonnets? They make for a good self-help book. My daughter tells me that Atomic Habits is good, but I haven't read it. I found Montaigne's essays very helpful when I was young, and I still do years later. I recommend reading the Penguin selection in parallel with Sarah Bakewell's Book How To Live: Or a LIfe of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer.

I have just been reminded that an undergraduate is required to be in residence (this means living within six miles of Carfax) for at least six weeks in each term. For this purpose, the current Michaelmas Term began on 1 October 2024. "Term" in the Residence Regulations has a wider meaning than "Full Term" (which is the eight week instructional period)

Freshers' Week counted as part of term for the purposes of residence. You have therefore already been in residence for the minimum six weeks and you could go home today without breaching the Regulations of the University.

You might be able to persuade your college, with the aid of the welfare staff, to let you attend tutorials by video in the next three weeks.

You can access academic papers on JSTOR, and may be able to obtain access to the library of a university near your home.

that's very nice to know, but i think i need to stay in college for these final three weeks. as awful as they will be, i'm hoping they will pass quicker as things will be on. it's 20 days to go and tomorrow it will be 19 - just trying to make it through each day. thank you for all your advice.

There will be some Christmas stuff like the market and Carol Concerts and Christmas celebrations. You can do some Christmas shopping before you go home too.One day at a time I am sure you will do it.It is pretty at Oxford at Christmas.I do not know if can get to visit the dining room at Christchurch. It is amazing when it has been decorated for Christmas and so is the Cathedral.

OK, but I don't think that there is any virtue in suffering.

Adding to what Scotney suggested, try Haydn's Christmas Mass performed by the Choir of Christ Church -

It's likely that Corelli''s Christmas Concerto will be played in more than one venue in Oxford between now and the end of term -

me neither, but i would like to prove to myself i can do it. i'm not a big fan of zoom/teams so i also think being at home may stress me out as i would be nervous for my tutorials/ classes. thank you for all your advice

aww this is such a relatable post. i hated my first year michaelmas as well (and many terms after) - i would say not only do the last 3 weeks go quite quick, but you end up feeling nostalgic for things that you thought you hated as the prospect of moving back grows nearer. PM me if you wanna discuss anything!! week 5 is notoriously difficult which is probably why you're feeling especially eager to leave right now

For a cheap bit of fun, go to watch the not very good Oxford United play at home. The atmosphere at the ground is good, all of the other Championship Teams are just as rubbish as Oxford, and they sell tasty pies at half time.

Take up a new sport or pastime? Some people who clogged up the clubs at Freshers' Fair will have decided by now that they don't actually like pottery, Sedan Chair Racing, or Kung Fu, so there will be space available at the Cheese Rolling Society, or whatever. Good luck!

thank you! have managed to put something in my diary every day this week and then there are some things planned in weeks 7/8. hoping this will make the final stretch feel less like one big block of time and instead break it up

ah thats nice to hear. in my opinion, the university experience has changed rapidly over the last 5-10 years and since a lot of the content people consume about uni was made a long time ago, expectations and experiences end up very different. personally, I've found that the increase in phone usage has led to people staying indoors a lot more so the uni environment tends to be a lot less social than i expected. not sure what your child's experience is but hope that if it does have to do with social issues, they understand its really not their fault.

Screen is the enemy of society. If we could un-invent the smart phone, we ought to do so.

OP, a further thought; You may not love your college, but your college may love you. Your college chose you from many applicants, and would like you to be happy and academically successful. Please keep on discussing with your college welfare staff the ways in which the college might help you to feel better.

Sorry to hear you're having a hard time. Term times can be rough at Oxford because the workload is so intense, and I definitely remember despairing more than once during fifth week and feeling like I was running out of gas. Once I got to mid to end sixth week I usually felt better (because the end is actually in sight!), hopefully that's the case for you too.

Sending you lots of hugs and good wishes - hang in there. Oxmas is great fun, the Christmas market is one of my favourite memories from my student days.

Weather permitting, I also recommend going outdoors and having a walk in nature. Port Meadow is lovely, and closer to the city centre there is University Parks, Christ Church Meadow and Addison's Walk.

Thank you again, it is a social issue. Here to support and listen and hopefully they’ll find their feet.
