The Student Room Group

NHS learning support fund and tuition

Hi
This all may sound rlly stupid but im really lost.
Im planning on doing undergraduate course at uni for mental health nursing and i understand tht i will get £5000 from the NHS LSF but also another £1000 as my course is a specialist course. I dont want to take a student loan because of the interest as it rlly goes against my religion.

What would happen if i used the LSF for paying for some of my tuition feees whilst i pay the remainder off myself?

I know that the LSF is for things like helping to pay for resources etc. But i do already hv a summer job and im ginna start a job for every Saturday as well from jan.

I don't want to get into any trouble if i use the LSF for some of my tuition fees. Pls help i dont know what to do.

You will need to contact the NHS LSF to explain why you are not applying for student finance as you normally need to be eligible for student finance to apply for the NHS LSF. They do make exceptions though (I've seen other TSR members report this). It is fine to spend the money on whatever you want so paying for your tuition fees will be okay. Just be aware that the payments probably won't align with when you are expected to pay your tuition fees. For students starting uni in Sep/Oct, this year the NHS LSF payments are towards mid November, March and July. Apart from tuition fees, are your parents going to cover your living costs?

Be aware of the funding differences between healthcare courses in England and Wales if you apply for your finance from Student Finance England.

If you attend a uni in England, you will be eligible for tuition fee and maintenance loans from SFE, and then you can apply to the NHS Learning Support Fund (NHS LSF) for the additional annual training grant of £5-6,000 per year. You can't apply for the NHS LSF if you go to a uni in Wales.

If you apply for the NHS Wales Bursary, although your tuition fees are covered, you need to work out if you will have enough money to cover your living costs. You can get an NHS grant of £1,000 and then a means tested bursary which could be anything from £0 to a maximum of £2,643 depending on household income (quoting current-year figures). You can apply for additional maintenance support from SFE, but this is currently capped at £2,670 for English (by comparison, a Welsh student could get up to £11,150 from SFW). So the maximum amount you might get is £6,313. This would cover accommodation costs but not much else.

And don't forget that you have to commit to work in Wales for two years following graduation.

Hi,

Thanks so much for replying,

Yes my parents will be covering my living costs.

To contact the NHS LSF, do you think its best to email or call them when explaining why I wont be using student finance?
I am eligible for student finance but I just dont want to use it due to religious reasons because the interest on student loans is not allowed. But do you think that NHS LSF will still be given to me because of this reason?
Also, since Im not planning on applying for student finance do I click self fund in the finance section on UCAS?
I read somewhere that if you do this, then the uni will assume that you're an international student which I am not. So im just so confused.

Your reason for not taking student finance is not uncommon and it is a valid reason. I have seen members in your situation on TSR say that they have been successful. I think that you still might need to apply for student finance to show the NHS LSF that you are eligible for funding, but then you can cancel your application before any money is paid out. It would be worth emailing the NHS LSF now to ask what the procedure is so that you get a response in writing. Use the contact form link on:

https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-learning-support-fund-lsf/contact-nhs-learning-support-fund

On your UCAS application, you would select the private finance option. Unis will know that you are a home student from the information you give on your residency status.

Hi sorry for late reply, yeh so i did my ucas and on there i put private finance as my funding section. In terms of the lsf, when we apply we just have to provide them with a letter as well explaining why we r not taking out any loans and we can use it for tuition fees as well

I’m a bit late, but I’m also in this position. Did you manage to find a way inshallah, please let me know as I am also in the same boat of not wanting to use a student loan.

I think the money will be given for you to use and help you with your studies anyway. Only issue with that is the funding will be split so they’ll give it to you in three separate occasions (or so I’ve been told by current students doing MH nursing)
