Can a older student make friends at UNI?

Hey. I'm an 33 years old student currently enrolled in an undergraduate psychology degree. I find it hard to make any friends at uni, people from my group only reach out when they need some help with lessons or assignments but that's pretty much it.
How do you made friends? How do you find your mate, even if it is just to chat or catch up for a coffee.

Hi👋

A great way to make friends at uni is to get involved in different initiatives there. It could mean becoming a course rep, a student ambassador, or even joining a club or society.

Continue to engage in class. If someone is struggling, you could offer your help. You can also ask people questions and share your experiences. The interactions you get could lead to friendships.

I wish you the very best of luck!

When I was at uni, I came across people in my club who was in his 40s and we are still in contact today.

Failing that, there's always a postgrad area or a drinking area for mature students, and I have seen my fair share of people who are 21+.

I think the main thing that is holding you back is your mindset. You can always relate to people of any age if you try hard enough. Also, just because there's an age gap it doesn't mean that you don't have anything in common. For one, I know of people who are into the oldies music which is great if you're born in the 90s. There are also activities and sports that never go out of style irrespective of age e.g. chess, cocktails, sports, video games, dungeon and dragons, etc.

I would just join clubs and societies that take your fancy, and hope things will blossom from there. Also opening up a bit and talk to your classmates would significantly help.

I am a student rep and also a mentor for other students but like I said in my previous post, people only reach out when they need something. :frown:
