PPE vs Law degree

Currently a year 12 student trying to figure out what to do at university and I’m pretty sure that I’ve whittled it down PPE or Law.

My GCSEs were 4 9s in Maths,History,RE and Physics 2 8s in English Lit and German 3 7s in biology, chemistry and English Lang and a 6 in music

My A-levels are in Maths, History and Politics

I really want to do a career in law or finance and I believe that PPE at a target uni for IB (Oxford,UCL,LSE and Warwick) or Law at a top uni is my best bet for careers in those areas.

I do not want to do the PGDL so I would have to do one or the other.

Does anyone have an advice for me on what to do.

If you're stuck between the two, there's such course as PPL, which is essentially Politics and Philosophy with Law instead of Economics. It's only offered at Kings and Warwick, so definitely prestigious. I had the same dilemma as you and have applied to mostly Law now (at Cambridge, Cardiff), with the two PPL's.

Thanks for the response but it’s not exactly helpful as my main reason for taking PPE would be for the Economics as it would help me get into banking. PPL does sound like a good however but it doesn’t really help answer my question as I’d still be choosing between Law or Economics.
My current plan is to apply for law next year and If I don’t get into a top Uni to do a gap year, study further maths and potentially apply for Econ + finance that year.
Perhaps start by consideing what interests you about a career in banking or in law. Do you know what investment bank and retail bank employees do? Do you know what lawyers do? The depictions of the City and the Law on TV are rarely accurate.

You will not greatly narrow your career options by studying PPE or Law, or any other subject (assuming that you have discounted a STEM based career). I add that adding a year to obtain a PGDL is not significant in the context of a multi decade career.
If you want to go into banking you should consider studying maths or physics also

I applied to PPE originially, now on a gap year REAPPLYING for Law. What's the point in PPE? You might as well do law because then at least its a qualifying law degree. With PPL, thats useless as its not LLB. Unless you're more focused on a career in finance, then go for Law

You don't need to do an economics degree to go into investment banking. You can do any degree - Egyptology, biology, history of art, anthropology, politics, law, materials science, geography, whatever floats your boat.

Note you also don't need a law degree to become a lawyer and you don't even need a GDL to become a solicitor in principle - you just need to take and pass the SQE (granted without a law degree or a prep course similar to the GDL that may be exceedingly challenging). You only need a qualifying law degree (QLD - either an undergraduate law degree or GDL) to become a barrister.

So you could go into either route with either of those degrees. Or indeed, any other degree. For example if you really love Viking and Old Norse Studies/Anglo Saxon, Norse and Celtic, that's just as valid as either of those other routes...if you go to a target uni (which notably, both of those courses are offered by target unis, namely UCL and Cambridge respectively).

The LNAT is very important for Law admissions. However, LSE considers a 'stellar' UCAS Personal Statement as one of the deciding factors in making an offer to an applicant.

Maths, History and Politics are fine, but if you want to do Finance, then Cambridge, LSE, UCL and Warwick expect Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics or History as I was told at the LSE Open Day for Economics.

I know they expect fm but I’m not so sure about physics??

That makes more sense, there’s no way they’d require physics

In the admissions tutor's words: "We want to see Maths and Further Maths and 2 other subjects from Economics and either History or Physics."

So it is up to you whether you choose Physics or History. 🙂
