Student finance for UK student studying in Scotland

Hi I’m a year 13 student applying to Nursing for 2025 entry. I am looking at the University of Edinburgh as my first choice uni. I was wandering, who do I apply with for student finance? Do I apply with the Scottish government or the English government. I am also half Scottish (dad Scottish, mum English), however I live full time in England, does this change anything.

In addition to this, in the UK we have the Learning Support Fund for Nursing students, is there anything equivalent and would I be eligible for this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Would you be moving to Scotland for the purpose of study?

Thanks,
Ross

There isn't an equivelent to the NHS LSF in Scotland. In general, it doesn't make financial sense for students resident in England and who get their finance from SFE to study a healthcare course in Scotland or Wales.

Oh, how come?

Because you can only get the £5000-£6000 training grant from the NHS LSF if you study at a uni in England.
Hi notkierantho,

You would need to speak to the NHS about this, we can't comment on their eligibility rules.

Thanks,
Calum

The OP also wanted to know if they need to apply to SFE or SAAS for student finance.

Yes, so if you're moving for the purposes of study then you'd apply to us, Student Finance England.

If you're moving to Scotland permanently, and arrive months before the course begins, then it should be SAAS.

Thanks, Graeme
