Accommodation and fines

Ime currently stuck to live with 6 other people and we have 2 ovens 1 oven peopel think it doesn't work so no one uses it besides me and another person ( it just needs longer to warm up) and rhe other oven is constantly being used and it looks like a massacre of dead rats inside its absolutely grim, it's only 3 months in and i am staying here till September, I'm worried that at the end of my contract I can get fined because of that even though it has nothing to do with me, flatmates are nice but messy sometimes. How do I avoid being responsible for something that isn't my doing, I took pics of the inside and the fact that I am using a different oven, I'm so worried that when September hits that oven gonna melt from all that shiz

Hi there,

It might be a good idea to talk to the people who run your accommodation as they may help you with this. If you go to reception, you should be able to explain the situation and let them know that you are trying to rectify the situation and see if there is anything that they can do for you about this. If you haven't done anything wrong, it would be unfair for you to get charged but they won't know that you haven't done anything if you don't talk to them about this before the end of the year.

You could also talk to the accommodation services at your uni as they also may be able to help you with this and see if there is anything that they can do for you about the situation. They may be able to talk to your halls for you, or there might be a chance that you could move flats if this is something that you would want to do. If you have the opportunity to move, this might be a good idea as you shouldn't be charged for the damages and you can live with people who may be cleaner.

Another person you could speak to is the help team at your uni if you can't speak to the other teams. They also should be able to help you as much as they can with this and if you explain that it is affecting you they hopefully will do as much as they can to help you.

I am sure you have spoke to your flatmates about this, but I think it may be a good idea to talk to them and say that they could maybe try and be a little bit more clean as this may help some of the issues that you are having. You could also speak to them about the oven and say that it might be a good idea to deep clean it before Christmas as you have been using it for quite a while and if it hasn't been cleaned it must be quite messy.

I hope things get better for you soon,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Hi,

I would echo the other advice given in this thread and recommend you speak to your accommodation and make them aware of the situation within your flat. Additionally, I would like to offer some reassurance in that your flatmates will probably also not want to acquire a fine and may well deep clean this over prior to moving out.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂
