Hi Sakina, I'm planning to apply for the Illustration and Visual Media course at LCC, I wanted to ask about class sizes and facility hours, as well as how easy and personal it is to get in touch with a tutor. Thank you. ( sorry if the questions are a bit difficult as its a different college and course than yours )

Hello , I am planning to apply to the LCF to study fashion marketing , I wanted to ask how difficult it is to actually get into the university. When researching it says only 26% of applicants get in and was wondering if this is actually true!

Hello, I’m writing my personal statement at the moment and am struggling a bit. Do they want me to only talk about my creative practice/process? Does it matter if I haven’t got experience outside of my current course? How do I make it stand out from the rest?

Hello,
It's great that you would like to come and study with us at UAL, even though I am on a different course, I can help out with some of your questions. Regarding class sizes, that depends on the course so unfortunately, I won't be able to help with that query.

Regarding facility hours, weekdays are from 9am-9pm. However some technical rooms may require a technician to be present and therefore might close a little earlier. However you are welcome to use the open spaces and library until the mentioned time. I would also like to note that as a UAL student, you will have access to all the campuses and their library resources which all have similar opening hours.

There are many ways to get in touch which your tutor, again, all dependent on your course. You will have your in person lecture days where you will have the opportunity to speak with your tutors as well as other staff on your course. When working on an assignment, you will have a mixture of tutorials and seminars. Tutorials are 1-0-1 checkin times where you can discuss your progress with your tutors and discuss any pressing matters. Tutorials are generally 15 minutes long, however depending on your course and year of study, it can amount to 30 minutes. Seminars alternatively are smaller group settings to discuss work and any thoughts you may have.

Besides this, you will have access to your tutors email where you will be able to contact them for any queries or issues you may have. My tutors personally have been very supportive and easy to contact. You have access to your core course leaders, as well as academic support and mental wellbeing officers for any external help you may require.

I hope this was helpful and goof luck with your application.

Hello,
Many of our fashion courses are popular and therefore competition is only natural. That however doesn't mean entry is impossible. I recommend working on your personal statement to really make yourself standout and show off your creative potential.

I wish you all the best with your application!

Hello,
The time it takes to review your portfolio is different depending on your course. As you can imagine, some courses may have a higher number of applicants and therefore the uni may take longer to respond.

Hello, I’m writing my personal statement at the moment and am struggling a bit. Do they want me to only talk about my creative practice/process? Does it matter if I haven’t got experience outside of my current course? How do I make it stand out from the rest?

Hello,
Your personal statement should be a balance between your creative practice/process as well as about yourself as an individual. When the admissions team are reading your personal statement, they should get a real sense of who you are, why you are suited for this course and potentially what you want to achieve through studying.

The easiest way to write a personal statement that stands out from the rest is by making sure it is about you specifically and your creative talents - nothing generic. For example, is there someone you are inspired by or a moment in your life that greatly influenced you to go down this creative pathway?

Make sure to add examples of what you are saying. For example, don't write that you have a "passion for fashion" if you haven't mentioned any ways that you have shown that. Perhaps you work in a retail store where you make an effort to stay on top of current trends, or you started a blog/social media page where you discuss your fashion style and knowledge. These are just example that you could mention to show solid evidence of your connection to your craft.

You also mentioned that you think you don't have experience outside of your course, I have two pieces of advice concerning that. First, if you think the work you are doing in your course is relevant, then mention those projects as well as what you have learnt from them and the ways it has influenced your decision to study x course. Secondly, consider all the experiences you have had so far and pick out the transferable skills that can be applied to your application. For example, if you worked a customer service job, maybe that taught you communication skills which is valuable as you can understand the multiple ways in which people express themselves and how to create in a way that people will understand and connect to. Consider your soft and hard skills to show how you think outside the box.

I hope this has helped and I wish you the best with your application.

Hello,
Yes, there are some entry requirements, both academic and creative that differ for each course you are applying to. These can all be found on the official UAL website, simply type in the course you would like to study and scroll to the entry requirements section which will list the relevant grades/UCAS points required to apply. Some courses may also require a portfolio of work or a written statement once you have applied, this will all be specified on the homepage for each course.

Hi Sakina! I was wondering what the major differences between the schools are? What do you love about LCF, is there something about it you prefer to the others, etc. Thank you!

Hello,
There are quite a few differences across the different colleges at UAL. For example, each has a different specialism. LCF being a fashion school has more fashion focused courses, events and industry guest speakers. I have had the opportunity to meet many industry professionals during my time so far including the Executive European Editor of Vogue and the deputy editor of 10 Magazine to name a few. Depending on your course, you will have relevant speakers to provide you with insight on your potential career paths.

One thing to note is that the same course may be offered across the different campuses, but have different focuses. I knew I wanted to study journalism and that was offered at LCF, LCC, and CSM. To make my selection process, I narrowed it down to fashion journalism which excluded LCC, and I chose LCF because it had fashion journalism and content creation as one course. So when making your decision, it is important to check the course content as even though it might have similar titles, you will learn different things on each. Some campuses have a tech focus, while others have an arts focus.

That being said, another thing I love about my course is despite it being a niche focus, the content is still broad enough for me to pursue multiple careers within the media sphere as we learn journalism as a whole, then focus our assignments on fashion specific topics.

What I love the most as a UAL student is the access we have to all the campuses at UAL. We are permitted to use all the study areas across the different buildings and libraries as well as attend events. This allows for great networking opportunities which means regardless of the campus you choose to study, you really do get the best of both worlds.

Hi Sakina! I'm applying for BA Film practice and BA film and television for 2025, and im a bit lost on what they want for the Film practice portfolio regarding the "contextual statement". I can barely find any guidance on it. Thank you!

Hello,
Both courses you are applying to are great and yes you are correct a portfolio will be necessary. Regarding the interview process, it is different for every course, but the general sense is that it is an opportunity to get to know you and your creative process. Use this as an opportunity to say what you couldn't in your portfolio ,but also ask questions as the interview process is as important for you as it is for the admissions team. Some interviews are done online, depending on locality and availability. You are also welcome to bring along some of your work that you'd like to talk about for some physical examples.

Once you apply, the university will contact you directly on the next steps of your application and it will all be clearer.
