For AS in year 12 you can sit 2 exams 1 pure and 1 applied maths (basically 2 papers in one sitting - stats and mechanics). AS does not go towards your A Level grade and you will only do the official paper at the end of this year if your school makes you.

In Year 13 you sit 3 papers 2 pure papers and 1 applied (same as above so basically 2). These are the only papers that go towards your A Level.

The reason AS exists is because it's a relic from years ago when A levels where modular and you could do exams at different points in year 12 and 13 to go towards a final grade. why they still have AS, I don't know.

So only the 3 (or 4 if your that way inclined) papers in year 13 are required and go towards an A level.
