what is the difference between 10/12 and 12/12 on a 12 marker in AQA GCSE RE?

okay so in my last RE exam i wrote an essay that met all the criteria. my teacher wrote 'good' and gave it 10/12 without elaborating on why. could some of you tell me what could have possibly lost me the other two marks?

Perhaps you didn't include enough points or quotes. Our school recommends using at least 3 quotes for a 12 marker and when i sat my GCSE RE exam last year I used the form of 3 points agree and 3 points disagree and like 2/3 for conclusion depending on how much time i had left and this managed to get me a grade 9. They are the main differences that distinguish a student from getting 10/11 and 12 marks!! Hope this helps, any more questions and I will be more than happy to help 🙂

Hi, I did AQA RS last year and got a 9.
Firstly, i really think teachers mark much harsher than in exams as I was averaging 9/10 in 12 markers. But then in the actual exam, the markers were much more leniant.
Secondly, there are some things you can focus on to improve your 12 marker:

1) When you use a QUOTE, ALWAYS explain what it means then APPLY it back to the question and how this would convince believers to agree/disagree with the statement. To help in doing this, after you have explained the quote use words like: This stresses/teaches/highlights/points to the fact that......

2) At the END of each paragraph comment on the STRENGTH of the argument to show you are critically thinking about it. To help in doing this: This argument is robust because... / This would make a believer strongly agree/disagree because... / This argument would be convincing to a believer because... . Try and use this on atleast 1 or 2 of your arguments, you don't have to do for each one

3) Always have a BALANCED CONCLUSION (essential for top marks). This means in your conclusion to give your opinion and why it is more stronger than the opposing opinion.

4) USE DISCOURSE MARKERS at the start of each paragraph (except the first one). These are words like, In contrast, however, Conversely etc.

5) In every 12 maker I did I only ever wrote 3 chunky paragraphs and a conclusion. One paragraph for agree, one with a disagree then the third I would decide based on what is easier to do.

6) ALWAYS PLAN you answer. As soon as you see the 12 maker draw a T-table and jot down a few words that link to an argument.

7) To make my paragraphs chunky I always first gave the view, then described what it is and how it is significant. THEN I would use a quote linking to the argument and explain it and apply it to the question

Finally, to get top marks in a 12 marker you need to practice AND know the content. To do this, I would recommend notes made by ' CSandRS ' on stuvia. Just search ' CSandRS ' on the stuvia search bar. They have very high quality notes for christianity, islam and themes A, B,D & E.
I hope this helps 🙂
