Hello!😊
I visited Sheffield during the most recent open day, i got a lot of the good side of Sheffield and heard a lot of positive opinions! I am planning to apply for the integrated masters next year in biochemistry and specialize in microbiology later, i just wanted to hear any things you didn't quite like from your subject, the timetable that you have to follow and your opinions of it or any problems you had during your study, and since you have been there for quite a while if you could give me some advice on the place itself and the social life, like what places are the best to go out with friends, nice cafes and just the overall vibes as i didn't get to see much of that since it was pouring rain when i went to visit! Thank you for reading!

Hi Zuzanna,
It is great that you are planning on doing an Integrated Masters in Biochemistry/Microbiology! I loved studying it and I hope you will too! In terms of things I didn't like, I can't really focus on anything in particular as I enjoyed it all. I covered a range of different topics but I found them to be very interesting in different ways. The main thing is getting used to thinking critically and reading scientific literature, but you will develop this throughout your degree! University is a different type of learning to A levels, so experimenting with learning/revision techniques will definitely be helpful throughout your degree.

In terms of social stuff, joining a society is always a great thing to do as you will be able to make friends with people that have similar hobbies to you. With 100s of different societies at the Student's Union, they are also great for trying out new activities too. Sheffield also has lots of great cafes, some of my favourites are Steam Yard, 200 degrees and Coffee Revolution (which is in our Student's Union and is a great place to study as well as meet with friends).

I have loved living in Sheffield these past few years, it is such a friendly place with lots to do! Overall, Sheffield is a big city but feels like a massive community and you will often see people you know when you go out places. You can also visit the Peak District as well, which is beautiful.

I hope this helped a bit and do feel free to ask me any other questions you may have

Heyy, I'm looking to go to the uni too, I'm wondering what the music looks like at the uni as an extra curricular, I wouldn't take it as a subject but would there be access to practice rooms with drums or pianos?, It would be very cool to start a band.

Hi Sofia!
Thank you for responding so fast! I got quite a bit from your answer and will try every place you mentioned if i do manage to get into Sheffield Uni, about the scientific literature though do you think it would be helpful to start looking into it now in my spare time? if so could you recommend some beginner friendly scientific literature from the biochemistry/microbiology point of view? Additionally if you could please give me some tips that helped you write your personal statement since the deadline is close and i am a bit stuck on what to mention, i understand you must have wrote this a while ago so i am really okay with anything .
Thanks a lot,
Zuzanna.

Hi _becks_ig_,
I am unfortunately not very musical, so don't have a lot of experience with this but I have friends that do a lot of music. I know that there are some piano rooms that can be booked out in the Ridge and the Edge (Endcliffe and Ranmoor) which can be used for practicing. I have friends that use these and it's quite easy to book slots online!

Equally, I know that there are loads of music societies you can get involved in at the Student's Union! You can search for some ones you might be interested in here: https://su.sheffield.ac.uk/activities/find-student-groups.

I hope this helps a bit!

Hi Zuzanna,
I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point as lecturers are good at introducing you to suitable literature and it is a gradual process throughout your degree! I didn't really read any proper scientific literature before going to university. However, if you are genuinely interested google scholar is a good place to look for literature.

In terms of personal statements, when I said I was interested in something eg: genetics, I found it helpful to back that statement up with stuff I had read to provide evidence of my interest. This doesn't have to be scientific literature, I remember talking about TEDTalks/ online lectures I had watched or books I had read! TEDTalks were good as they are usually quite accessible and are easily to listen to! Of course everyone approaches a personal statement differently, but I found this helpful.

I hope this helped,
Sofia

Hi Sugarmonkey,
I don't have a sample timetable, but when I was in first year we tended to have two days of labs (maybe 10am-1pm) and then 2/3 modules which we would have lectures for over the rest of the week. Lectures were generally about an hour each, sometimes longer. Obviously this was a few years ago and the format might have changed, but I hope this helped.
Please don't hesitate to ask me any other questions!

Hi Sofia,
Visited the Uni of Sheffield recently as I am thinking of making it my firm, however the place looked so quite I didn’t see any shops. So I was wondering if it gets any livelier and how far it is from the city as i didn’t get a chance to visit the city I am planning on doing biomedical engineering 😊

Hi SACTIVATE7,
That is great to hear that you are thinking of making Sheffield your firm choice! Campus is not far from the centre of Sheffield (~10mins walk) where there are lots of shops/restaurants/cafes. For example, the Moor has lots of shops, a cinema and a gym. Division Street is also very close to campus and has some of my favourite cafes and vintage shops! If you were looking for more shops, you can get to Meadowhall with a short tram ride or car journey. This is the largest shopping centre in Yorkshire and has anything you would need. It's great to go at the weekend with friends as a break from studying!
I hope this helped and do let me know if you have any other questions,
Sofia

Hi Sofia,
I went to the open day but it was raining so I didn’t get a chance to look at the accommodation. What is it like and do you have any recommendations for the best value accommodation? Thanks!

Hi E,
I can only share my experience of living in a certain accommodation, but if you want more information about the options you can either look at https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation or email [email protected].

I lived in Froggatt in Endcliffe in first year, and I really enjoyed it. I had an ensuite and lived in a flat of 10 people. Equally the flat next to us had 6 people, so this can vary. Froggatt was very close to the Edge and very convenient for walking to the laundry room, reception and being close to the Village Shop! In the Edge there is also a community space which is great for studying, and means you don't always have to walk to the library.

A few blocks were very similar to Froggatt including Yarncliffe, Derwent etc. I think the only difference was the colour of the walls and the location. I had a great time staying in uni accommodation in my first year, and I highly recommend it! It was a great way to meet people and make friends

Please don't hesitate to ask me any other questions you may have!

Hi Sofia,
On the subject of accommodation, I was wondering if any apartments in blocks Froggatt, Yarncliffe or Burbage have been released yet? I have been checking regularly and haven't seen any, so I wanted to make sure I haven't missed them before I look elsewhere.
Thanks, EH

Hi EH,
The flats are released in waves, so do keep looking as there may still be flats in these blocks that are yet to be released! It might be helpful to contact the accommodation team to see if they can provide you with any helpful information. Details on how to contact them can be found here: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/contact
I hope this helped,

Do business courses go into clearing as I’m not confident I will meet my firm offer and do not want to go to my insurance?

Hi Ksjsjssjj,
It has not yet been confirmed which courses will go into clearing. However, you may find the following webpage useful: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/clearing. On this webpage you can register your interest in a clearing place from the 5th of July 2025.
I hope this helped,
