Hardship form

I’m in my third year of undergraduate planning to start my master's soon after I graduate but my sfe account was in overpayment. Apparently I was supposed to work a minimum of 10 hours per week (I applied as a migrant worker) but I did not know and during semester 2 in year 2, I worked fewer hours to focus on my assignments. Student finance said I was not eligible for maintenance and now during my third year I find myself with no support at all. I can barely cover my rent and food with my part-time work but cannot afford more than that. I am also an estranged student with no family support so my savings may not be enough to support me till the end of the academic year.
By doing some research I found out about the hardship form and I was wondering if I could defer my overpayment till the end of my studies (after my master's) or if by applying for the hardship form the overpayment would be deferred only till the end of my undergraduate course. Any chance you could clarify? I am also planning on getting in touch with my university for funding. Thanks a lot!

Hi there,

With Financial Hardship, if you apply to defer the overpayment this would be until the end of that Academic Year only. If you're currently on year 3 is this your final year?

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, year 3 would be my last year as an undergraduate but I will start my postgraduate course as soon as I graduate from my undergraduate. My postgraduate course should last 2 year as I am planning to do a part-time course instead of full time like my undergraduate.

Thank you.

If you have an overpayment for your undergraduate course this will not carry onto your Masters course.

You can apply for Financial Hardship to defer it for your undergraduate year. Then when you apply for Masters you'd get the full funding if you require it.

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,

If I defer the overpayment would that mean that I will repay it while I’m doing my master’s and still get the full funding needed for my master’s?

Hi didone97,

Yes, you would usually need to set up a payment plan but you can discuss your option with our Repayment Recoveries department.

Thanks,
Calum
