Why did this guy in my class do this?

So basically there’s this guy back in year 12 I used to make strong eye contact with him because he looked so familiar I don’t know where but I really felt that I knew him so this guy noticed it and just kept avoiding me maybe it’s because he thinks I like him or something so that’s that. Avoiding as in when I come close he avoids eye contact purposely.

In year 13, all of a sudden I find out he’s in a different class of mine and then he keeps turning around and looking at me once class is over like before he leaves I think I caught him like 4 times. And then whenever I’m behind him he turns around and looks at me then does it again after a while, he does it maximum two times if I’m behind him,. And he’s don’t his over like 13 times, he’s never smiled at me directly.

But last week it was so weird like the minute he locked eyes with ne he quickly turned the other direction so shy, and then again I locked eyes and he got extremely shy again and tried hard to not smile. So I just left it since I didn’t know whether it’s the attention I was giving or whether he genuinely liked me and kept avoiding him. So today in my class coincidently he sits right behind me and the minute I saw him walk into class I purposely smiled to myself to evoke a reaction in him because I just want to confirm if he could like me because I think I was starting to like him a bit so I did that.

After that he was smiling at me so much which was so weird cus my back was facing him and he was unpacking the stuff in his bag so slowly standing up. The minute I turned around he got so scared like his eyes got so wide and he quickly looked somewhere else trying to hide the smile.
What’s going on.
