Acess to HE Veterinary Science, has anyone actually got into veterinary med with it?

I’m currently completing my access to HE veterinary science through LearnDirect. I currently have full marks on my first 3 assignments and plan to keep it that way if possible. I know it’s so hard to get into veterinary medicine but I just wanted to see if anyone has did it with the course i’m doing. I have a lot of clinical experience and experience with small and large animal surgery. I’d love more information on how to boost my chances!

I applied this year and received two offers. Based on my experience, here are some tips for a successful application:

1.

Meet All Requirements
Ensure you meet all the prerequisites, such as relevant work experience and academic distinctions. Most require 45 credits distinction (which is all modules). Not all universities accept HE Access (Liverpool and Cambridge do not), so email admissions and check (June/ July).

2.

Start Early
Begin your UCAS application as soon as it opens (around 3rd September).
Link your college (e.g., learndirect) to your application early so they are aware you are applying and can prepare your reference.

3.

Reference and Predicted Grades
Complete at least five modules for your college to provide a reference and nine modules for them to give predicted grades. Make sure you're on track with your studies.

4.

Submit Early
Submit your application at least a week before the UCAS deadline (15th October). This gives your college enough time to review your application and send it back to UCAS.
I submitted mine on 14th October, which caused unnecessary stress due to last-minute processing.

Also, note that not all of them even read your personal statement! Check application process per each uni.

Absolutely yes: my friend did exactly the same and got into Bristol veterinary school.

Keep up your good grades, keep up the same level of commitment and determination and you will fly. Access really does set up you so well for University.

I wish you every success. As above, before applying just check which Universities accept Access to HE as not all of them do and those that do will have strict requirements in terms of the Units required and the necessary grades.

With your experience of the clinical environment you will really shine early on. If you want something to do over the summer mind start your veterinary anatomy journey- it will make it a lot easier when you start in September.

Hi,

I have seen so many mixed reviews on learndirect and looked at doing the access to HE veterinary science course but the customer service rudeness and pushing to enroll has really put me off. have you found it to be a good company so far with support on subject areas where needed?

Can you apply to do the course at your local college or FE provider? Having some face to face teaching might really help you. The course is typically timetabled over 2-3 days so you could realistically commute there if it was some distance away.

Hey! I completed an Access to HE in Veterinary Science last year! I recieved offers from all the unis I applied to for vet med and vet nursing! Mine was an in-person course though so I would double check with the admissions team at each uni but it is absolutely possible to get onto a vet med course from an access course!

Excellent advice, I have taught on Access to HE programs for over 10 years and on site programs have a much lower drop out rate due to the 1 2 1 academic and pastoral support. Vetinary courses are quite niche on Access like dentistry as they are expensive to put on, so you might not find many colleges that do them. A lot of colleges have cut back on areas such as social sciences, social work, humanities and law which you would think would be quite popular.

Unfortunately in Northern Ireland there are no access to veterinary courses where I live that are suitable for me. I have much experience with A levels and college in past so the face to face isn’t an issue as I prefer more self taught work. I feel this is the way I am thriving. More the question is if it’s possible to actually get into Veterinary with the distance course.

As long as you apply to the schools that say they accept access courses you will have as much chance of gaining a place as any other applicant, in fact Bristol has a guaranteed offer policy for access course applicants so it can even be an advantage!
