Changing uni and course

Hi all hope you can help
I am 1st year Chemistry student at Southampton university and been thinking about changing course to pysic at ucl
I get in to usl for pysic this August and declined the place to study chemistry at Southampton uni.
Now after long thinking about it I would love to change course and transfer to ucl .Does anyone went through this before ? Is it possible to change it on 2 year ?? Or re apply through ucas again ???
You won’t be able to get into year 2 of a physics degree with year 1 in chemistry.

If you want to change university then you need a 2025 UCAS application. Ideally with a reference from your tutor at Southampton.

Absolutely you can drop out and reapply to attend UCL for physics next year. The chem and physics syllabus are very different so you will not be allowed to move to year 2 physics.

Hi @Jarzynska

I am sorry to hear your current course isn't for you, but it's great that you have identified an alternative course. The thread shared is a good one to look at.

I would recommend speaking to your tutors at your current university about how you're finding your current course and if there is anything that could be done to support you. I would then recommend speaking directly to UCL to ask if they'd need you to reapply via UCAS, which is likely given the circumstances. I suspect due to the difference in the courses you would need to begin Physics in Year One, but do check with UCL.

I don't believe they would let you transfer to study Physics at the Uni of Southampton at this stage of the first year, but again it is worth double-checking if you didn't wish to complete this year of Chemistry but start studying Physics now.

Although not everything included in this link is relevant, you might find aspects helpful:

If you haven't visited UCL it is worth attending an open day if you can, these are a great way to:

Meet academic staff and find out more about your chosen course, such as career prospects.

Meet fellow students and get an insight into student life at that university

Speak to other departments such as student support.

Have a campus tour and view the course facilities

Explore local accommodation options to see whether you feel at home in them.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions I will be happy to help if I can.

Good luck with whatever you decide to study.

Lucy ☺️
