Choices ??

Hii

So I plan to apply for Mpharm 2025. I've already sent my Ucas off to my school and i was happy with the choices i picked, I chose Sheffield Manchester Keele Leicester and Nottingham.
However - for Sheffield and Leicester a Pharmacy degree is quite new , i don't regret putting them down but im worried if it was a smart choice to.

I've done research and My main three are Manchester Nottingham and Keele anyways but regardless i'm just quite worried about applying to a school who hasn't done pharmacy before. So is this a big deal? Does it matter if the University is introducing the course new would it still be as good as a uni that has already done the course for years.

Hi @21sparkserrol!

As long as the course is accredited, there should not be any issues. Nonetheless, it would be arguably harder to find information about the course in general. On the whole, I would not worry as you also have more options and the clearing process in August as a last resort.

All the best,
Abian.

Hey there 😁

To answer your questions, it's important to note that MPharm courses that are accredited must meet specific standards, so newer courses should not be considered inferior to "older" ones. For this reason, I recommend keeping your options open for now and exploring each choice in greater detail before making any decisions.

Here’s a structured approach I always recommend when evaluating your options:

1.

Start with academic quality. Look into the expertise of the course and teaching staff. Student reviews can provide valuable insights into the learning experience, and attending Open Days is an excellent way to gather first-hand information. During these visits, you can talk to lecturers and current students, tour the facilities, and even participate in taster lectures to get a feel for the programme.

2.

Consider what matters most to you. Beyond academics, think about factors like career opportunities, campus societies, or the social life that each university offers. Reflect on your personal priorities and expectations for your university experience. What aspects are non-negotiable for you? Establishing these preferences will help guide your decision-making process.

Remember, the university experience is about more than just studying. It’s also about personal and professional growth, and finding a place where you feel comfortable and supported. Take the time to weigh your options thoughtfully and choose the one that aligns best with both your academic goals and your broader expectations.

As for the MPharm programme at De Montfort University. Friends of mine have praised its strong connections with the health sector and excellent facilities, and from my own experience, DMU provides incredible professional support. Although I haven’t graduated yet, I already have an impressive CV and feel fully prepared to enter the job market. I participated in multiple academic-led trips abroad and did a few internships and training courses - I never thought it would be possible alongside my studies.

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

Hi @21sparkserrol 👋

Great to hear you’re considering the University of Leicester as one of your options for Pharmacy! I can see you’ve already received insightful responses, and I thought I’d highlight some details about our course that might help you make an informed decision. It’s completely understandable to feel unsure about applying to a university offering a new course, but in this case, there’s a lot to feel confident and positive about!

The MPharm programme at Leicester is developed and taught by our well-established School of Healthcare, meaning it’s built on a strong foundation of academic expertise and healthcare education. The course is already provisionally accredited by the GPhC and full accreditation is actively underway. This means once you graduate, you’ll be fully eligible to enter Foundation Year training and then register as a pharmacist.

What really sets Leicester apart is the student experience and practical learning. You’ll be studying in dedicated School of Healthcare spaces on campus and at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, giving you early exposure to clinical environments. The course is designed to be very hands-on and relevant covering everything from consultations and prescribing to communicating with fellow healthcare professionals.

Plus, the Pharmacy Society at Leicester hosts regular events which will help you build friendships and a sense of community throughout your degree. So while the course is new, it’s being delivered with care, high professional standards, and strong institutional support!

I really hope this helps! Wishing you the very best of luck in your journey ahead ☺️

Can anyone remember which MPHARM courses went into clearing ? Daughter predicted ABB, needing advice which Uni’s to apply for amd not wasting choices by not hitting the min entry requirements . Any advice ? Her favourite is LJMU but unsure on others

Why is she relying on Clearing - why isnt she applying in the main cycle?

I never said she is applying through clearing . It was advice regarding which courses went into clearing hence suggesting uni’s who didn’t fill all their places straight off . This will help her make her choices , especially where she is on the edge of the minimum entry requirements

Hi,

Pharmacy at LJMU didn’t officially go into Clearing last year, as all places on the course were taken. It was briefly listed on the website but later removed. Having applied there myself, I can say it hasn’t been in Clearing in recent years after results day, although this can vary depending on the availability of spaces in any given year.

Hope this helps, best of luck with your daughter’s applications!

The Bath Uni franchised course at Plymouth Uni was in Clearing last year. There would have been others - I think Lancashire, Hertfordshire and Portsmouth, and probably Wolverhampton and Lincoln - but this does not mean that any of these Unis will be in Clearing next August, or even if they are, that they will accept very low grades 'just to fill the course'.

Pharmacy is not a mega-competitive subject at the majority of Universities, especially those asking for lower grades. If your daughter meets the entry requirements, she will most likely get interviews/offers - and with ABB, at least one AAB choice would be sensible as many Unis will interview those one grade below the requirements, ie. Plymouth Pharmacy MPharm (Hons) at the University of Plymouth

Thanks Tayba,
Getting into LJMU to do MPHARM is where my daughter is keeping everything crossed for , that is her first choice by far. She knew it was a popular choice so wanted to have some realistic back ups 😊

Just wanted to warn whoever reads this comment who’s planning to study at Sheffield. Do not pick Sheffield whatever you do, it’s a new course they make the students go in everyday, the timetable is so full it’s like a full time job it’s ridiculous. The staff, when you ask them a simple questions they make you feel embarrassed for being so stupid for asking that question. They’ll bring you in everyday, half of the lointless lectures they give could be sent over in a email but it takes them 2 hours to cover. Will bring you in at 9 and finish at 5 and the odd wednesday afternoon they give you as a break they’ll put a compulsory trip in that you have no choice but to go to even if it doesn’t interest you, making you feel like a child. Honestly, pick any other uni but this one, as other students at other unis will be at a advantage, having free time to be able to balance looking after themselves and keeping themselves healthy and still being able to revise/ keep up with the content.
