Can I claim childcare through UC while waiting for childcare grant?

I left employment and started a full time undergraduate course in September. I have applied for the childcare grant but it is still being processed and in the meantime have been paying for childcare from my student loan. I have read that the childcare grant cannot be back-paid. I used to have 85% of childcare costs paid through UC when I was working, and am still receiving a UC top up but havent been claiming childcare since starting uni as I assumed I couldn't.
Am I able to claim back childcare costs from UC for the period between starting uni and childcare grant coming through?

Hi 👋

I'm in similar position to yourself, and have been attempting to secure childcare grant from SFE since October 24 🤯!

My understanding is that once you leave employment you are no longer entitled to the childcare element of UC - as this is only for those in employment.

It's not easy navigating the benefits system as a lone parent and mature student; I've spent hours number crunching, researching, contemplating if I can afford to live as a lone parent mature student vs working part-time 🤔

My advice would be to contact the relevant people at your university who can give you more advice and help, which is what I intend to do, as childcare is expensive and I'm worried about my finances if SFE do not give me the childcare grant ☹️

Good luck 🙏
