Applying to more than 1 Course at Uni of Edinburgh advice

Hi, I have seen answers to similar questions as this however they are from a good few years ago so thought I'd ask again. I have applied to 2 courses at the Uni of Edinburgh since it is the one I'd really like to go to the most, so I applied for 1 single honours and 1 joint honours, since the joint had lower entry requirements. I'd like to do the single honours the most however I'd be more than happy to do either.
On the application confirmation email from the uni it says this:

"If you have applied to more than one degree programme at the University, then please email as soon as you can - and no later than 29 January 2025 - to confirm what your preferred degree would be. It is unusual for us to make more than one offer per applicant, and we will assume that you are happy to receive an offer for any degree that you have applied to.
Indicating a preference does not guarantee that an offer will be made. If you wish to change your application to be considered for a degree that you did not originally apply for, we are unable to guarantee that we can honour these requests after 29 January 2025."

So, I would say I'd prefer to do the single honours - but then, does this mean that there is no chance I could get into the joint honours? I am reluctant to discard the joint one, if so, in case I don't meet the single one's entry requirements and then get rejected from both. Basically I am asking, if I state my preferred one will I ONLY be able to get an offer for that one. If I say I prefer the single honours but then get rejected from that is there no chance they'd offer me the joint honours instead? If this is the case should I consider changing one of them to a different university to better my chances?
I hope this makes sense. If anyone has any experience with something similar or any advice I would appreciate it. Thankyou!

I applied pretty similiarly to you (applied for a maths degree and a joint cs and maths degree at edin). The thing with joint degrees is that if you decide you don't like one of the subjects, you can usually drop it after your first year. Honestly, as long as you've taken all the required course modules, switching degrees shouldn't be that difficult. I'd say take the joint degree, but I don't know exactly since you haven't specified which subjects the degrees are in.

I applied to two but completely different faculties and didn't get this part of the email. Must only be if your two choices overlap.

Hmm, in that case, I'd pick whichever you think is easier to get into and has better job prospects. Weird though, I never got this email and I just got two unconditionals.

Thanks for the reply. I applied to Philosophy and Philosophy with Theology. I emailed them back shortly after to say I'd prefer the single honours one, that was a few weeks ago and I am just waiting on feedback on my applications at the minute. Do you think it's too late to change my preferred to the joint one? Or if i even should if I could? Congrats on your 2 unconditionals btw, thats literally the dream 😭

I had a look at PATH (course choice portal) and all the required course for a single honours in Philosophy are there in the joint degree. I'd ask to start out on the joint degree because of the lower entry reqs, and after a year you can switch to the single honours course. You will have to do 40 credits of theology in first year but that shouldn't be a problem. Honestly the way the degrees seem to be structured you could even switch after your second year too if you wanted to.

If you want more information about your course or the options available feel free to ask. I know I would have chosen differently if I had better information about my course options, and I wouldn't want you to regret any choices once you've started your degree.
