Uni Starter Packs

I’ve seen a few companies that offer student starter kits I.e. kitchen essentials, bedding etc. has anyone purchased these? Opinions?

I appreciate they will be more expensive than buying individually, but would be much more convenient getting delivered directly to halls.

Hi @Murray27

I've seen these and they do look pretty good!

I think you're right - they may be a little pricier than shopping for each item yourself, but they can have pros too.
If you're moving into halls, it could be useful to have everything arrive altogether. You can then probably save on transport or just generally be more efficient with your packing. Plus, you'll most likely take the items with you throughout uni, so you'll definitely get your use out of them.

The main reasons I didn't do one of these boxes myself is 1. I thought I could get most things myself for a little cheaper, 2. they didn't include everything I wanted, so I would have had to go shopping anyway, and 3. I like some more specific requirements when it comes to things like bedding, so I just preferred choosing it myself separately. So maybe these are things you can consider when deciding.

I think with some more research, there are probably some great options for this, so have a think and weigh up what is easiest for you. And hopefully someone who has tried one of these boxes responds too so you have another perspective on this.

Hope this helps. 🙂

These are really designed for International students who can't easily transport everything to Uni.
They are very basic quality and a commercial company wouldn't be offering this unless they could make ££ out of it.

Hi there,

I used to live with Unite Students, and there was an option to purchase a starter pack: (https://www.unitestudents.com/shop) It's convinient if you don't want to spend much time shopping. However, I prefer to buy all essentials myself as I enjoy walking around and buying things

Take care,
Ilya

What about Trangia/camping cookware and enamel crockery? It’s what I am planning on: collapsible, good quality and robust . Only suitable for one person meals though.

Hi @Murray27,

I think making a pros and cons list of the starter packs may help, as well as some research. I think they can be good and easy yet there is the price to it. When I moved to uni, I got a lot of things from IKEA and B&M which didn't break the bank. I can also be a little picky, so I wanted to pick everything myself so it is really your preference.

I also started with just the basics and couple of sets then built it over time. This helped me to budget with the purchases better. 🙂

Hope this helps!

If you’re willing to pay for convenience, then go for the starter packs but in all honesty, you’ll be paying an extra £30-£50. I would personally take advantage of any Black Friday offers or any cheap sets going such as crockery or cutlery.

Just because I can verify it’s VERY unlikely (unless you have housemates that respect privacy) you’ll leave with everything you walked in with. Translation, in my final year of uni, all my housemates pooled all cutlery together and I lost every single piece of my cutlery, several plates and all but one of my cookery gear…

Hi @Murray27 ,

I agree that some of them can be quite good and they are convenient as you can arrange them to be at your halls when you get there or not long after you move in. In first year one of my flatmates got one and they said that it was good and they came to uni on the train so it worked a lot better for them. I would say if you don't have much room in the car, or you are coming on the train or other public transport it would be a good idea!

I also agree with what has been said in that I think it depends how fussy you are with certain things. If you would rather be able to choose exactly what you want, it might not be the best idea but if you think you will be happy with whatever comes then go for it! I am sure there is some level of personalisation allowed in these boxes so you may be able to specify some things that you want too.

I hope this helps!
