should i do 4 a levels and an epq, or 5 a levels? (for medicine)

I'd still aim for A* in all of them - I'd do biology, chemistry. maths, further maths and an epq, and if I did an a level instead of an epq, it'd be something not related to STEM.

I'm not applying for MDV, but am in Y13 doing 4 A levels and an EPQ (majority STEM). Doing 5 A levels (especially with 4 STEM subjects) is not feasible. Do 4 and an EPQ if you would really like to. Keep in mind that you will be busy with other things like preparing for UCAT, getting work experience, etc. You want to try to minimise your workload as much as possible.

Even the smartest person I know (who got 13 9s at GCSE) struggled with balancing 4 A levels (identical to yours), volunteering, work experience, UCAT prep, interview prep, supercurricular exploration, etc. - you get the gist. In summary, it's almost impossible to do 5 A levels with your subjects and get A*s in all of them whilst balancing med applications. Best of luck for everything.

No, most schools won't allow this as you will be over-stretched.

Either 4 Alevels or 3 plus an EPQ - you do NOT need more for Medicine.

Neither (in my opinion).

Do 3 A-levels or 3 A-levels+ EPQ

Doing more is useless for medicine (FM doesn’t mean anything in this context).

Just do 3 a-levels regardless or at a push, do 4 then drop one. No need to do more than 3 let alone more than 4.

So just do Chemistry, Maths and Biology. No benefit to doing FM in my opinion unless you’re interested in maths related courses (Economics, Maths, Stats, Physics, Engineering, CS etc).

Ok, thanks so much for the help!

Thanks for the advice! The reason I wanted to take FM is because I think it's pretty interesting. But also, my teacher said FM has to be a fourth A-level. Also, why do some people take 4 at first and then drop one?

Np man, if you’ve got any questions about EPQ, further maths or maths, feel free to ask anytime.

Some people can't decide so start with 4.

We only allow 4 if FMaths is one of them.

The old modular A level system was better - everyine did 4 and took AS which counted towards the A level. Then continued with 3 from there.

Some people take 4 a-levels and drop one because their school still requires them to have to do 4 a-levels in Y12 with the option of dropping to 3 in Y13 (even though doing 4 a-levels doesn’t benefit your application in most cases and I’ve only heard of Imperial commonly giving out 4 A-level offers). So they basically (according to their school) can’t start off with only doing 3 A-levels in Y12 even if they wanted to in their school.

Others may simply be slightly uncertain on what a-levels they want to do or are unsure about FM so they do 4 a-levels to see how things go, then drop an A-level if they find that doing 3 is better for them.

I mean I guess you could do Biology, Maths, FM and Chemistry (especially if you’re confident that you’ll enjoy the subjects and get those A/A*s), but it wouldn’t be of much benefit in my opinion as the university will most likely only look at 3 A-levels and you’re not looking to do a mathsy course.

Hi, I'm in Yr12 doing that exact combo (bio, chem, maths, further maths and an epq which isnt stem related), and am going to apply for medicine next year, 5 A-levels is definitely a stretch, especially with 4 of them stem. Its much better if you can get A*s in 4 subjects and an EPQ rather that getting As and Bs in 5 subjects. I wouldnt recommend doing FM for medicine though because medical schools generally don't look as it as a separate subject from maths as there is a lot of overlap with normal maths. The only reason I'm doing it is because I love all things maths...
Hope this helps (˶ᵔ ᵔ˶)

ahh ok, thank you! I'm still doing GCSEs but for A-levels if I do do Further Maths it's because I really enjoy maths!
