Private Candidate/UCAS grades and reference

So i am doing 3 A-Levels (English Lit, Politics and Sociology) from home self-taught with no attachment to a sixth form or distance learning company.

I will be a 2026 private candidate. However next year when it comes to UCAS applications how would i go about predicted grades? I had a brief idea of hiring a private tutor for each subject online and getting them to predict my grades. However i don’t know if many tutors will be happy to offer this service to me.

As for references i had the same idea, with the private tutors giving me a reference for each subject. However again, not sure if they would be happy to offer this service to me. Is it worth reaching out in case?

I would reach out to private tutors as most will be happy to do this for you. You have a year for them to get to know you so they will be able to provide the most accurate reference and grades. I was in a similar position but I only had a month before the ucas deadline so couldnt get a tutor in time. I instead sat mocks at a private exam centre and they gave me grades based on that! Thats also an option but a tutor is definitely better

You can only nominate a single referee for a UCAS application. That person has the option to provide predicted grades.

If you have multiple tutors then you will need them to coordinate their references and predictions with a single nominated referee.

Do you think a private tutor would be able to provide a reference or would that not be allowed by ucas/ Universities?

Hey, I'm in the same situation and the deadline is super close. Did you find an answer? Would a private tutor work?

Hi, unfortunately not, most tutors I contacted said they would only assess for predicted grades but could not provide a reference whilst the rest were unable to both given the short time frame. Might be better to ask for a reference from your previous college/sixth form.

Do you have predicted grades for your application?
