Help for year 12 - a levels

Hi all. I'm in year 12 studying bio chem maths and I want to do medicine. But the thing is my GCSEs aren't that great and I know medicine is really competitive so is there anything I can do in year 12 to make up for it? For context, I got one 9, five 8s, and three 7s. I'm predicted AAB but am confident I can get A* in chemistry and at least an A for maths. So essentially, are my options for applying limited? I am really ambitious and want to go to a russell group uni, is there anything I can do this year to improve my odds?

Most unis dont care about your gcses as long as you have atleast a grade 6/7 in English and Maths so i wouldnt worry if i was you! Some unis are a bit more picky, I am applying to Kings for Dentistry and they compare your top 7 gcse grades to all their other applicants and then interview who has the highest. I am not sure if any uni does this for Medicine so i would just research that before you apply! Your grades are amazing though dont worry!!

Hi, your GCSE's are not terrible, just don't apply to GCSE heavy unis (research this, applying strategically is the best option)

Why set on russel group? Does it really matter for med? You easily could anyways.

Try boost your predicted grades to AAA, this will open up all unis for consideration. (apart from a few such as exeter... maybe)

being predicted AAB this early in year 12 is an amazing sign, if u keep it up ur most definitely gonna be predicted AAA minimum in year 13 <3 gcses also really aren’t all that important unless you’re applying somewhere like oxford or cambridge as long as you have good grades in english language and maths, so your options aren’t very limited at all

i’d recommend doing some wider reading for medicine (make another post on here asking for suggestions!) and attending lectures, seminars etc  also try and get some work experience as a receptionist or smth at a gp surgery or a pharmacy

It's too early for predictions - are these your target grades?

Check which unis heavily focus on GCSEs - many do not.

thank you so much! it was just really stressing me out because there are so many people at my school who got all 9s but this is reassuring. do you have any recommendations for wider reading and where to find lectures?

it has just been a personal goal of mine, truly no other reasons. do you have any knowledge on how to strategically apply and which unis are not that GCSE focused? thank you!

i unfortunately have no wider reading suggestions bcs all 3 of my a levels are humanities subjects, but i’m sure tons of people on here would have some recommendations if u make another post asking x

as for lectures, i found a few literally just by searching up “sociology lectures london” on google (obvs u should search wtv subject you’re interested in), i‘m lucky enough to live in london so there’s loads of stuff here anyways but it’s worth checking your area in case there’s smth going on

Well you've hardly learnt a quarter of the A level - no way will I be predicting at this stage as I've not taught any A* stuff yet. The highest 'working at' grade I can honestly give is an A and not many of those yet. Student targets are higher ...
