Uni help plz

Should I favour uni which do a Msci psychology course over the bsc ones? As I was considering changing some of my uni choices to Swansea and Exeter to do MSci psychology courses would this be better applying to Cardiff and royal Holloway?

In that case you just need to take any BPS accredited course and ideally try to find one that has contacts and support for getting clinical work experience https://www.clearing-house.org.uk/applications/entry-requirements/relevant-experience

Hi there!

Amy from Cardiff University here. As a recent graduate from BSc Psychology with Professional Placement, and a current MSc Children's Psychological Disorders student, I would definitely recommend prioritising a BPS accredited degree first. Without a BPS accredited degree, it will be very difficult to pursue potential MSc courses or clinical roles. Secondly, you can always do an undergraduate degree first, to ensure that you would like to continue down that career path post-grad, and then apply for an MSc for after you graduate (if you would like to!).

Cardiff University offer a 4 year course (which is the one I did!), where you complete a placement year between 2nd and final year. This was such incredible valuable experience, which was hands-on, clinical and very valued by employers. So, I would also prioritise gaining relevant clinical work experience, as opposed to just getting a Masters (as most DClinPsy courses don't actually require any form of MSc degree!)

Do you have any other questions regarding the courses at Cardiff or potential career paths? Do let me know and I'll get back to you ASAP!

Hello!
Msci psychology courses can be a great opportunity to continue studies past an undergraduate degree, and especially within the Clinical psychological field can be particularly helpful for future careers. The Swansea Msci course is great because it makes the transition from undergrad to masters easier allowing you to stay in the same uni with the same academics which can help with the potential stress of continuing education, compared to almost starting a-new in a new uni. Within Swansea uni there is also the choice to switch between the two courses (should you have the right grades, as Msci typically has higher requirements), meaning that if you make a choice that doesn't suit you too well, there is support to assist the change to one that does suit you more!

However, if there is a specific Undergrad Psychology course that seems a perfect fit for you, but doesn’t have an Msci course, you shouldn’t discredit it immediately only due to this. I am completing a Bsc Psychology course at Swansea currently, and now looking into Masters courses, which has worked well for me as it means I can look into the more specific parts of psychology that I have learnt i enjoy over the last few years due to the Bsc course, from Clinical to Forensic psychology. Therefore, Msci can be a great course, but you don’t necessarily need to favour uni choices with an Msci course.

I hope this helps!

Be aware that its a tough career pathway, and that most Psych grads go into a very wide range of other career areas.
