Resitting A Levels/reapplying to university

I’ve just reapplied to university (about a month ago) for English Literature (for context, last year I applied for Law, but then realised on January after my application was in that it wasn’t what I actually wanted to do) so I’ve taken a gap year and reapplied.

I also achieve BBB for my A Levels which was a massive shock as I was predicted A*AA and had been achieved those grades throughout the year- so I will most likely be resitting.

However, I don’t know what to resit, I would like to go to either Sheffield which is ABB (+A in EPQ which I have achieved) however, my dream is Durham, which is obviously A*AA. My school has advised me not to resit all 3 A Levels (which i definitely would rather not do) but I do like the Sheffield course. I am yet to hear back from Durham so I may not even get an offer, but is there anyone else resitting all three or maybe thinking of that? Or anyone who has applied to Durham for English Literature and heard anything?

Thank you

HEY!

(I don't know if this will help because it's late but im in a similar situation so we can relate!)

Im resitting 3 A levels (independently) at my school too as I missed my firm and wanted to switch university courses. My school advised me not to do this obviously because it is very challenging but they allowed me to do it anyways.
My school let me resit mocks and will let me re-sit my A levels for free! They also supported me through UCAS, so I had it fairly easy.

I would recommend resitting all three if you REALLY want to go to Durham. However, you need to really think about it. what mainly guided my decision making was: overall happiness- would I be happier at my firm or insurance? Also, Finances, location, job prospects, how hard will it be for me to revise at home, and me wanting to change my course.

One of the reasons why I chose to resit was because I had all of my alevel revision resources. Also I started improving in my A levels subjects however, it was too late as A levels were really close by so I couldn't apply what I had learned to the real thing.

However, you should also consider whether or not resitting all 3 A levels independently will be manageable. From recently sitting my mocks I went from a BBC to AAB (I need an AAA), with just revising at home.

If you really like the Sheffield course why not go for it! Obviously do loads of research before to make sure that's where you want to go.

But personally if I were you I would resit all 3 (that's what im doing to get to my dream uni too, so im quite biased). From my perspective, I would rather take a huge risk in order to achieve my dreams that settling for something that I don't want. However, uni is also just 3 years of your life so maybe it's not that deep? That's what I was told 😭

Anyways this is a really big decision. MAKE SURE TO PUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH FIRST x

What did you end up doing? Are you applying to Sheffield or Durham?

Hi- ended up getting an offer from both Sheffield ans Durham- but I’m just resetting 2 Alevels (hoping my grades will be A*AB, as I have achieved a B in German which I’m not resitting) which is only one grade less than what they’re asking for, so hoping they’ll take me on one grade less 🙏

Hi ellie.tbu, 👋

It's great to hear you have received an offer from the university of Sheffield! And for English Literature too (my subject!). 📚️

I applied for Sheffield and didn't quite meet the expected grades but they still accepted me on the course as I had selected them as my firm choice, so I have found them to be quite lenient in that regard!

Let me know if you have any questions about studying and living in Sheffield, or about studying English Literature at Sheffield more specifically. I did my BA and MA in English Literature and now I'm doing my PhD in the same subject, all at uni of Sheffield (I just absolutely love the department at Sheffield, it's so friendly and welcoming!). 😃

So I'd be more than happy to help if you had any questions about anything!

And good luck for your re-sits! 🙏

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😀
