Good option for Masters in English Literature in Uk

Hello,

This is Hoor ul Ain. I have recently completed my BS in English with really good GPA. Now I want to choose a university in UK for my MS in English Literature (Preferred cities are London and Manchester).

Can you recommends some good yet a bit affordable options with good academic and social exposure.

Looking forward to get some good recommendations..
Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, and Nottingham spring to mind as being pretty strong departments in general for English lit across the range of periods and approaches. If you're more focused on Shakespeare Birmingham has a specialist institute for the study of Shakespeare and reception/dramaturgical stuff, with specialists masters for it. If you're interested in a particular period or approach that may narrow down other options (e.g. if interested in medieval English lit York and St Andrews may be option; SOAS may be worth looking into if interested in world literatures and/or postcolonial approaches).

Note that in the UK a masters in English lit will almost invariably not be an MSc. You'd be looking at MA (or at Oxbridge, MPhil) courses primarily.

Hi there,

At the University of Nottingham, we have a range of options for postgraduate courses in English.

If you are looking for an affordable option, I would recommend our MA English Online. This course is studied part time and is completely online. Tuition fees are the same for UK and international students.

For in-person study (which might be more sociable!) I can recommend our MA English Literature or our MA English Studies. These courses are slightly more expensive than MA English Online, but you will learn in-person.

Nottingham is a great city if you would like something more budget-friendly than London. It is also a UNESCO City of Literature and has some brilliant bookshops and writing groups.

Hope this helps.

Hi!

I am a current postgraduate student at Lancaster university, studying English Literary Studies. We have a lot of great options at our university, ranging from the Masters I am currently studying to Creative Writing MA, Gender Studies and English MA and English Literary Research - further information can be found here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/postgraduate-courses/

The university has a lot of great (english literature) based activities you can partake in too, such as our student run newspapers and magazines where students can publish their own work, book clubs and lots of beautiful spaces to read and write!

We are also very close to places like Manchester, Liverpool and the Lake District, all easily accessible by train and bus, so there is an added dimension of social exposure there too!

If you'd like to find out more about Lancaster as a place, I would definitely check out our website for general information - https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/

Good luck with your decision making!

Hello,

The university of Chester offers several postgraduate English degrees. These include Creative writing MRes, Gender studies MRes, TESOL MA and Storytelling MRes. There is also (and the one I recommend) the English MRes. The brilliant aspect of studying an MRes is that you can carry out your own research which gives you the scope to tailor your degree to the specific aspects of literature etc you are most interested in. You can also develop total independent study, with the support of one of the tutors here.

I highly recommend Chester English department. We have some wonderful tutors who are all super supportive and so knowledgeable. Chester itself is a great university, it has a fantastic social side and is very progressive in the support it offers it’s students, especially international students.

As a city, Chester has everything and the centre is only a 10 minute walk from campus. It’s a small city, but is full of events going on, high street shops, a theatre, gyms and bars and restaurants boasting the widest choice of global cuisine.

I hope this is of help,
Jess
