Scared of choosing the wrong career

I've applied to do mental health nursing and always thought I would be good at it but today in college we had to watch a documentary on abductions and it was so sad. I was telling everyone that it was too sad for me and they were like how are u gonna be a nurse? I'm scared that I'm too empathetic. Idk what to do now as I've got no backup options I've always wanted to work in the mh sector due to my own struggles but now I'm not sure if I'd be a good nurse because all the other girls I know who are doing nursing aren't really emotional

Hi there! I'm Kiera, a third-year psych student.

I don't take nursing or know too much about it, but I had the same worries going into psychology, especially as I'm hoping to work with children in the future. However, based on my experiences in psychology, empathy only makes you better at your job. If you have empathy it shows you care, makes you relatable and can make it easier to communicate with patients, and can help them feel more comfortable opening up to you🤗

If you've always wanted to work in the MH sector, don't give up on your dream because of others! Everyone deals with and expresses their emotions differently, so don't compare yourself to others if you can help it😊

Hopefully, this helps a little!

if a nurse lacks empathy at the start of their training i would be worried about their ability to nurse. if you can't feel for your patients your in the wrong job. don't worry you will develop a professional barrier to the pain you will see. you will feel for them and try to help them but you will not be destroyed by it. even now my wife after 20 years of nursing gets sad after losing long standing patients. if that ever leaves you its time to get out of nursing. its ok to be nervous but have a chat to an experienced nurse how they cope and destress

Thankyou, I was just worried because everyone else who is applying to do nursing often looks down on me as they are the opposite of me, but this has given me some hope, thankyou so much 😭😭
