Hi Saurie. Were you advised as to why your application was cancelled? Did you provide any forms or evidence? Thanks, David

they said that because I haven't been in the UK for three consecutive years

Hi Saurie,

What nationality are you and were you asked to provide evidence of your residency? Where have you lived for the last 3 years prior to the 1st day of the 1st academic year of your course?

Thanks, Drew

I am a british citizen and I moved back to the UK in 2022. I lived in Sri Lanka before that due to personal reasons, I moved there in 2008 and needed to stay there longer than needed due to covid travel restrictions.

Hi Saurie,

So when you moved to Sri Lanka it was not temporary but it was a permanent move at the time?

Thanks, Drew

It was not intended to be permanent but it ended up being due to COVID

Hi Saurie,

As the move was permanent and you cannot provide evidence that the move was temporary then you would need to be living in the UK for 3 years prior to the 1st day of the 1st academic year of your course. We would not fund the course that you have started and we have no control over the university classing you as an international student.

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,
Would that apply for the rest of my course i.e would I need to pay £16k for the rest of my four years?

Hi Saurie,

You would not get funding from us at all for the course and you would need to speak to the university to see how much they would charge you every year for the Tuition Fee Loan.

Thanks, Drew

Hi drew,
would I not be eligible for home student finance as I would have been in the UK for three consecutive years next year?(second year of my course)

Hi Saurie,

No as you would need to be living in the UK for 3 years prior to the 1st day of the 1st academic year of your course.

Hi Drew,
Is this still applicable under the new legislation? https://ukcisa.org.uk/studentnews/2064/Version-7-of-Who-pays-home-fees-for-HE-in-England#:~:text=The%20requirement%20to%20be%20%E2%80%98settled%E2%80%99%20can%20be%20met%20part%2Dway%20through%20a%20course states that "For academic years that start on or after 1 August 2024, instead of being tied to the beginning of the course, it will be good enough for these categories if you have settled immigration status on the first day of whatever academic year you are paying fees for (this might be Year 2, 3, 4 or later of your course)."

Hi there,

It's up to the university if they class you as a home student or international for fees. We can't advise them what to charge you, so you would need to discuss the Fee amount with them. To be eligible with us for finance you need to meet the criteria on our website https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies

Thanks,
Claire
