Moving back home after estrangement loan

Recently I had to leave home and have been receiving the full estrangement loan from SFE. I am still not living at home, but am hoping to eventually try to reconcile with my parents.

If I were to move back home at any point, would I have to immediately pay back the money I received this year? I am worried because the money has gone towards paying my rent, paying off my overdraft and paying for food/transport etc. If they were to ask my to pay back the full student loan straight away, I would have to drop out of uni.

So would they just change my student loan for next year back to the 'living at home' amount, or would I have a huge amount to pay back right away?

I hope this makes sense!

Hi there. Are you going to be moving back with your parents within this current Academic Year or would you be returning to them for the next year of your course? Thanks, David

Hi David, I would not be returning home this academic year. My tenancy for my current student home runs until August, and then I am going to do a placement abroad until May. So the earliest I would move back home would be summer 2026. However, I don't know whether I'll need to put a UK home address for when I go on my year abroad still, and if I can get my parents to agree that address would be theirs even though I wouldn't actually be living there.

Hi there, as you will not be returning home for the remainder of this academic year, you will be ok to remain under the estrangement criteria. When you make your new application for the next academic year (and are back living at home) you would just apply as normal and have your sponsors (parents) support your application. If you need to change the address, then you can update this via the online account. If an issue arises due to the change of address, you can submit a covering letter to explain this. But only if an issue arises. Thanks, Stephen.
