Application result is being delayed despite all information being recieved

Hi Student Finance,

I understand that processing times are currently averaging 25 days, but I’m concerned about the situation of students who applied over two months ago and have already submitted all required and correct information. Despite this, their processing dates keep getting delayed, and there is no clear indication that their loans will arrive before the new year.

Starting university full-time means that many students can no longer work the hours we did before in order to support ourselves. As the delays continue, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities such as rent and food.

For students who support themselves without family assistance, this ongoing delay is becoming a real financial strain. What are students in this position supposed to do when they can no longer afford to live, due to delays in processing? Is there a way for these cases to be escalated for more urgent processing?

I understand the challenges Student Finance is facing with the high volume of applications, but it is vital that those of us who are completely independent receive timely support. Any guidance or updates on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Best regards,
Molly

Hi Molly,

Are you speaking about your application? When you log into your online account can you see a processing date? Have you sent any new evidence recently?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew. I'm actually not speaking about my application. I am speaking about a person close to me who is struggling to pay rent and I am becoming concerned about their wellbeing. They have not sent any new evidence, they sent their evidence in September and the person on the phone has confirmed that all the evidence is there and there is nothing they can do. The processing date keeps changing. It was the 5th of November, then the 23rd of November, now the 5th of December. This creates such an uncertainty, in turn creating massive anxiety, as you can imagine if you were relying on this loan to survive.

Hi Molly,

Our timescales are estimates and are subject to change. If they have spoke to someone on the phone and they have advised they are not able to do anything then they would need to allow more time for the application to be processed. I know that is not the answer that you would have wanted but unfortunately we need to wait until the application is processed.

Thanks, Drew

Yes I understand this is the situation, and of course I understand it is not the workers fault, but I am really shocked and saddened that this what is happening within the Student Loans Company. What would you suggest in the interim for a student whose university was threatening to kick them out because they cannot pay the tuition fees because of this? In your experience, what could you suggest for a student that cannot afford to attend their lectures? I am trying to find a solution other than just waiting, as there is so much at risk. I hope you understand my worry.

Hi Molly,

The student could ask the university if they want the student to set up Consent to Share which would allow the university to contact us on behalf of the student and we would give them read only access. If the university then call us we can explain the situation and the timescales to them.

Thanks, Drew
