Grants For Dependants

Hello,

I am starting a part-time undergraduate course with the London Institute of Banking and Finance and I wonder, whether I would be eligible to get Grants For Dependants (Childcare Grant, Adult Dependants’ Grant and Parents' Learning Allowance) from Student Finance England. I live in England by the way. My course has 100% intensity (120 credits per year), its like a full-time course, but classified as a part-time one. The gov website says:

"If you’re a full-time student in higher education and an adult depends on you financially, you can apply for an Adult Dependants’ "

So I am not sure whether my part-time course (with 100% intensity) would be classified as a full-time for funding purposes by SFE.

Hi Berkant,

Is your course distance learning?

Thanks,
Claire

Hello Claire,

Yes, the course is distance learning, classified as a part-time, with 100% study intensity.

You wouldn't be eligible for Grants for Dependents for your course as we don't offer this for part time distance learning courses. Students are only eligible for Tuition Fees for their course. We only offer the Part Time Maintenance Loan if you're doing the course distance learning due to a disability. Is this the case for yourself?

Thanks,
Claire

Quite surprised to hear that even if I study with 100% intensity (120per year / like full-time students), I would not be eligible for example for a Childcare Grant, simply because my course is classified part-time. Did I understand you correctly?

Meanwhile I have not started my course yet and would probably switch to a course, that is classified as a full-time in order to be eligible for a full support. And yes, I will be doing the course online (distance learning) due to a disability.
Hi Berkant1234,

Yes, that is correct. Distance Learning courses only attract the Tuition Fee Loan. The exception to this is when you are distance learning due to a disability that prevents you from attending a course in person, then you may be eligible to apply for a Maintenance Loan.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

You are very, very helpful. And very professional! Thank you!

I have another question, that is related to the type of medical evidence you can accept. I mean an evidence, which shows that a disability is preventing the student from attending the course in person. Can you put some light on this, please? I could find info about the DSA requirements, but not the distance learning requirements. All I can understand is that DSA team and the DL team are based at different departments and have different requirements with regards to the medical evidence needed. I could not find any related SLC guidance on the web.
Hi Berkant1234,

There is a specific form called a Medical Declaration form which is emailed to you directly upon request that your GP would complete to apply for the Maintenance Loan for a distance learning course. When you apply, you would indicate that you wish to apply for this so that the form is emailed to you directly.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Who else (apart from the GP) can sign this Medical Declaration? In my case for example (have mental problems) I prefer (for various reasons) to talk, discuss my problems, do all the examinations and seek professional help from a Clinical Psychologist who is based in another EU country (where I originate from). Can for example my overseas Clinical Psychologist sign this Medial Declaration?
Hi Berkant1234,

As long as it is completed by a qualified medical professional, this would be acceptable.

Thanks, Clare
Hi Clare,

One last question. My PT course is starting next week, but I am almost sure that I will not start this course and instead apply to start a full-time undergraduate course in January 2025. So my question is, do I have to cancel my SFE application (before my PT course officially starts next week / 5/12/24) and make a new funding application for the full-time course I plan to study from January2025? Or I can simply fill a CO (change of circumstances form) and upload it online? Please clarify this to me!

Hi there. You will not be able to change the course details for this as you are changing from Part Time to Full Time. For this, you will need to send a new paper PN1 Full Time application form which you can find from the link below. Once complete, you need to return this by post and this will take around 6-8 weeks to be processed. Thanks, David

Hi David,

Can I simply cancel my SFE application (I have not started my pt course yet) and make a new application (online) for a full-time course funding?

Hi there. Depending on the current status of your application it may not allow this. You can try to cancel and reapply online but if this does not work then the guidance I have listed previously needs to be followed. Thanks, David
